Our diverse group of legal professionals, law students, law clerks/paralegals, legal administrative assistants and business support services team work together, and are respected and valued for their individual contributions. We strongly encourage interested candidates who are Indigenous to apply and expressly self-identify as such in their application.
PROFILE
Gowling WLG is currently seeking an associate practicing in the area of Indigenous and Environmental Law to join its national Indigenous Law group. The ideal candidate will have 2 to 3 years of experience with deep interest of, and experience in, Indigenous Law and Environmental Assessment. The group regularly acts on complex matters at the intersection of Indigenous, administrative, environmental, energy, and natural resource law. Its mandates regularly include negotiating precedent-setting agreements between Indigenous people, proponents, and non-Indigenous governments. Our lawyers are trusted advisors, giving advice that is timely, focused and solutions-orientated. The successful candidate will work closely with strong teammates and great mentors to provide exceptional client service.
ABOUT GOWLING WLG'S INDIGENOUS LAW GROUP
Gowling WLG's Indigenous Law Group has served as counsel to First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples for more than half a century. In that time, the firm has been instrumental in precedent-setting resource development projects, self-government agreements and cases before the Supreme Court of Canada.
EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will have excellent writing and communication skills, and experience in some or all of the following:
1. Advising in complex negotiations relating to the recognition and implementation of Indigenous rights including the inherent right of self-government;
2. Advising in provincial, federal, and/or Indigenous environmental assessment;
3. Modern treaty negotiations and/or enforcement;
4. The Indigenous/natural resource sector (forestry, mining, renewable energy, pipelines, nuclear, hydro, etc.).
The successful candidate will be a mid-level associate looking to become part of a dynamic national practice dedicated to assisting Indigenous clients.
Gowling WLG employees benefit from a hybrid work environment.
The salary range for this position is $127,000 to $157,000 annually: the base pay offered may vary depending on Year of Call, specific practice-related knowledge, skills, experience, internal and market equity. In addition, Gowling WLG associates are eligible to a competitive bonus program based on performance.
Not sure if you meet all the requirements? If you are excited about this opportunity but your experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
Gowling WLG is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation at any time during the recruitment process, please let us know.
While we appreciate all applications received, only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
Applications from Indigenous lawyers with lived-experience will be looked upon favourably. Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous may be asked to provide documentation in support of their self-identification.
