Our client in the non-profit sector is seeking a SQL Server Security consultant for a short term project to implement security hardening for their SQL Server instances.

Responsibilities:

- Conduct security assessments of on-prem SQL Server instances to identify vulnerabilities and misconfigurations.
- Harden SQL Server security using best practices and native tools, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), Always Encrypted, Row-Level Security, and Dynamic Data Masking.
- Configure role-based access control (RBAC), least privilege access, and Active Directory (AD) integration for authentication and authorization.
- Secure SQL Server network configurations, including firewall rules, encryption (SSL/TLS), and TCP port hardening.
- Implement and optimize SQL Server Audit and Extended Events for logging security-related activities.
- Restrict SQL Server Agent Jobs and ad-hoc query execution to prevent unauthorized actions.
- Apply security hardening techniques for SQL backups, data encryption, and compliance auditing.
- Monitor and detect anomalous activity using SQL Server security logs and SIEM tools.
- Provide remediation plans and documentation for ongoing SQL security maintenance.
- Train internal teams on SQL Server security best practices and compliance requirements.

Requirements:

- 7+ years of SQL Server administration and security experience in enterprise environments.
- Expertise in SQL Server security features, including TDE, Always Encrypted, SQL Audit, RBAC, and Policy-Based Management.
- Strong knowledge of Active Directory authentication, Kerberos, and Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSA).
- Experience with firewall configurations, port hardening, and SSL/TLS encryption for SQL Server.
- Hands-on experience with PowerShell scripting for SQL security automation.
- Familiarity with CIS benchmarks, GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and PCI-DSS compliance.
- Knowledge of SQL Server High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) security best practices.
- Experience with SIEM tools (Splunk, Azure Sentinel, or similar) for SQL Server security monitoring.
- Excellent communication skills for documenting security measures and training internal teams.
- Certifications: Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, CISSP, or Security+ preferred.
- Knowledge of cloud-based SQL security (Azure SQL, AWS RDS for SQL Server) is a plus.
