ANT306H5F - Forensic Anthropology Field School
Course Description: Introduction to the field of forensic anthropological field techniques and scene interpretation. A 2-week field school will be held on the U of T Mississauga campus (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., two weeks in August). Weekly 2-hour classes will be held during the fall term. In these classes, students will examine casts, maps, photos and other evidence collected in the field, for the purposes of scene reconstruction and presentation in court. Session: August 1, 2025– December 31, 2025
Field School:The field school portion of the course runs from Tuesday, August 5 to Friday, August 15, 2025, from 9am-5pm, excluding weekends.
Practicals: Tuesday 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM (in-person) (running from September- December 2025)
Estimated TA Support: Up to 465 hours (total number of assigned hours is dependent on course enrolment and course approvals)

Qualifications: A Ph.D. (completed or ABD) in Anthropology, specializing in Forensic Anthropology or a very closely related field. Knowledge of forensic anthropology methodology, best practices and techniques including excavation, the recovery of human skeletal remains to support death investigations, knowledge of legislative authorities and policies, including Coroners Act including Reg.180, Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act, FIPPA, Anatomy Act and Ontario's Death Investigation System and criminal investigation process (i.e. handling forensic evidence and samples in order to maintain chain of continuity).
Preferred Qualifications:Professional membership, and experience acting as an expert witness in a Canadian court of law, are highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have a forensic science background, scientific research, and casework experience. We are seeking candidates with teaching excellence and mastery of the subject area. Experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar systems (e.g., Quercus, Canvas-based technologies, Zoom, etc.) is preferred.
Duties: Preparation and delivery of course material, leading the 2-week field school in person at UTM; preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and/or exams, as well as practicals; supervision of teaching assistants (includes providing instruction on how to mark, as well as holding office hours); marking of students' work (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials); submission of grades to university officials; and holding regular office hours. The mode of instruction for this course is expected to be in-person. However, if this changes for any reason, you will be provided with as much advance notice as practicable.
