The Landscape Technician I with Urban Forestry is, in its simplest form, a passionate protector of the urban forest. In this role, you will lend your expertise in all things arboricultural to contractors, citizens, and other work areas within the City of Edmonton to ensure compliance with City standards wherever the urban forest may be affected. You will succeed in this role if you can manage your time and tasks well, and have the ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of different work units. The Landscape Technicians hired will be responsible for supporting Forestry to successfully complete inspections and coordination of contract tree work and ground disturbance permitting procedures. As an advocate of the urban forest, you will perform a mix of the following:

What will you do?

- Submit for underground utility locates and issue ground disturbance permits to in-house crews and contractors
- Coordinate scheduling and verify sites for contract work - including hydro-vac, tree planting, and stump grinding
- Inspect in-house and contract tree plantings for adherence with City of Edmonton Volume 5 Landscape Standards
- Inspect and verify completion of all contract work is in adherence to City Standards and procedures
- Coordinate the distribution of notice letters to citizens for tree work activities related to hydro-vac, stump grinding, and tree planting activities and schedule subsequent tree work
- Collect data in the field, including tree measurements and assessments, and record data on City trees in GIS software
- Assess tree and planting site conditions and make decisions on trees that can be planted
- Review landscape drawings and maps to determine tree or site ownership
- Coordinate contractor work to ensure compliance with City standards and agreements while advising and/or resolving any discrepancies in the work
- Conduct field inspections and assess the progress and completion of contracted tree work
- Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
- Coordinate with and make decisions on tree sites with utility providers
- Work with Traffic Operations to coordinate On-Street Construction and Maintenance permits for tree work activities
- Respond to public complaints or inquiries, orally or in writing
- Perform related work as required

Qualifications:

- Completion of a 2-year technology diploma with an arboricultural emphasis or a related field, including the ability to identify and assess local tree species
- 2 years experience in the landscaping industry

Assets:

- Knowledge and experience using GIS software, such as AEGIS (ArcGIS) or SLIM
- International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist
- Possession of Standard First Aid and CPR certification
- Experience in landscape construction, nursery, natural areas management and/or tree care
- Experience in contract supervision
- Knowledge of landscape construction procedures
- Experience coordinating and inspecting contractor work
- Experience conducting ground disturbance and submitting utility locates
- Knowledge of SAP

Skills required for success:

- Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
- Knowledge of methods and standards common to the specifications of contract implementation
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively deal with the public
- Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask
- Ability to perform light to medium manual labor, such as carrying minimal equipment to and from various worksites
- Proficiency in using Google Applications, such as Google Documents, Google Sheets and Google Meets

Conditions of Employment:

- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
- Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to perform physical tasks such as walking, bending, and lifting
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Successful candidates must arrange their own transportation, to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance

Work Environment:

- The work environment is a combination of office settings and outdoor fieldwork. You will be required to visit various City of Edmonton properties, including parks, sports fields, and natural areas. The position may involve exposure to various weather conditions, uneven terrain, and potential hazards associated with landscape maintenance and construction activities.
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
