Geotechnical Engineer – Senior Level – Dams Focus

Summary:
The person in this position will be part of an innovative geotechnical engineering team of over 90 geotechnical engineers and field geologists. Barr's geotechnical engineering team provides a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, and groundwater and seepage.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Managing geotechnical projects from concept to construction
2. Maintaining and developing client relationships
3. Providing support through training/mentorship for geotechnical engineers
4. Preparing proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations
5. Coordinating field and laboratory testing
6. Interpreting and analyzing geotechnical data to establish engineering properties of materials and foundation recommendations
7. Completing geotechnical engineering analyses including seepage, slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, and rotational stiffness
8. Preparing reports
9. Assist in supporting the growth of the dam practice area
10. Traveling for periodic out-of-town assignments
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related
2. 10 years of relevant work experience
3. Professional Engineer (PEng.) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year
4. Broad knowledge of and experience with civil engineering and design codes, standards, guidelines, and best practices to complete complex dam evaluation, design, and construction projects
5. Facilitation experience with PFMAs/failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs)
6. Experience performing probability and consequence analysis for qualitative risk assessments
7. Demonstrated understanding of the consulting profession, including flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
8. Willingness to travel to support project needs
9. Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet creation
10. Strong oral and written communication skills
11. Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future
12. Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Graduate degree in civil or geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to geotechnical or dam engineering
2. 15+ years of analysis and design experience, including inspecting concrete and earthen dams and/or levees, especially related to dam repair and rehabilitation
3. Experience with established dam safety programs including Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Part 12 dam safety program requirements or similar dam safety programs
4. Prior approval as an independent consultant to complete FERC Part 12 dam safety inspections
5. Interest in and ability to perform project execution and management, business development, and staff mentoring
6. Facilitation experience with qualitative and quantitative dam risk assessments
7. Computer skills and work experience in statistical analysis software or risk analysis software (@Risk or similar)
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.
NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions characteristic of industrial facilities. Assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
