Job Summary
The Asia Forest Research Centre (AFRC) works as a cross-departmental entity within the UBC Faculty of Forestry, managing numerous complex relations with a wide range of different institutions across Asia. Through enhancement of professional Master's programs, research, and communication networks, AFRC aims to create a more sustainable platform for forest science advancements and education in Asia. Programs and services under AFRC include consulting and tech support, research and collaborations, student recruitment and mobility, and capacity building.
The Manager will support the Director who has oversight responsibility for the AFRC, and acts as a central resource and hub for initiatives and programs/services management. The incumbent builds and maintains connections and collaborations with, and among, various stakeholders, including, but not limited to, disciplinary Faculties and departments at UBC, partner universities and research institutes in the Asia Pacific region, industry, governments and NGOs. The incumbent will also work with national and international professionals to learn from and contribute to the development of best practices in higher forestry education.
Work Performed
- Identifies marketing and development strategies for promoting programs and services offered by the AFRC, which includes creating promotion materials, presenting at conferences or fairs, organizing site visits, events and workshops, develop efficient partnerships, maintaining effective communications with partners;
- Facilitates partnership development and the establishment of MOUs and agreements to promote student mobility, faculty exchange, and research cooperation;
- Explores and identifies potential partners for AFRC such as universities, research institutes, NGOs, and industries;
- Manages mid-career forester training programs for capacity building purposes, including consultation with partner organizations, information collection, course and workshop design, designing of feasibility plans, coordination with instructors, and evaluation of service delivery;
- Ensures the AFRC to act as an incubator to promote new applications in forestry industries, knowledge and technique transfer, and academic-industry cooperation;
- Provides networking opportunities to ensure that the AFRC acts a communication and collaboration platform for research projects;
- Plans and organizes seminars, workshops, field trips, and social events for visiting scholars from partner universities and research institutes;
- Participates in the development of the AFRC's strategic plan and fundraising initiatives;
- Advises undergraduate transfer/exchange/visiting students during application process and organizes the orientation programs for students enrolled in the program;
- Provides supervision of work-learn students;
- Performs other duties where required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience with at least two years of experience in business analysis or project management, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Forestry, or related area, Master's degree is preferred.
- Related experience in the field of international education, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience and understanding of the unique international student market, including knowledge of major international education systems and general admission requirements for students schooled outside of Canada as well as international students schooled within the Canadian secondary and college system.
- Understanding of the importance of the international schools base for recruitment and the interests and concerns of international counselors.
- Solid experience in a post-secondary environment, in event management and program development.
- Oral and written fluency in Mandarin required.
- Ability to execute a strategic plan, and to assess and analyze achievement of goals.
- Ability to manage and evaluate projects and lead implementation of initiatives.
- Superior written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to present to groups large and small.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data to support recommendations for change; ability to move from ideas to implementation.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with peers and to work effectively as a member of a high performance, results-oriented team.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment; a creative and resourceful problem solver.
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively within often tight timelines and competing priorities.
- Ability to multi-task and pay attention to important details.
- Proficient with MS Office Applications and use of various management information systems; experience working with Client Relationship Management systems; experience working with UBC's Student Information System would be a definite asset.
- Familiarity with the Chinese Educational System
- Knowledge of current issues in Forestry, Conservation and Wood Products in BC Canada and internationally.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills and fluency in one of the languages of the regions within Asia, such as Chinese would be required.
- Preference given to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
