Consultant Psychiatrist: Emergency Department Psych. Service

Are you a Consultant Psychiatrist ardent about promoting the dignity of patients (aged 13 and above) experiencing apsychiatric emergency? If so, a rare opportunity has arisen to join the Emergency Department Psychiatric services. You will be working closely with the staff in Emergency Departments towards shared goals; equitable access to psychiatric assessment based on need and without discrimination and you will be passionate about contributing to avoiding unnecessary admissions to Oxford University Hospital (OUH) or Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust (OHFT) inpatient services. EDPS is commissioned by the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and delivered by Oxford Health NHS FT within the Emergency Departments (ED) of Oxford University Hospitals. Main duties of the job EDPS provides 24-hour psychiatric assessment and advice to the Emergency Departments at the John Radcliffe (JR) and Horton Hospitals. The JR ED is a major trauma centre, has annual attendances exceeding 110,000 and serves a population of around 400,000. The Horton Hospital is 27 miles away and is a 'local ED' with around 50,000 annual attendances and serving a population of 200,000. EDPS has close links with the staff in the EDs working to the following shared aims: - Parity of esteem between physical and mental health care in ED. - Equitable access to psychiatric assessment based on need and without discrimination. - Promoting the dignity of patients and a positive patient experience. - Contribution to avoiding unnecessary admissions to OUH or OHFT inpatient services. - Supporting and reporting timely ED discharge in line with national and regional targets. - Supporting and maintaining existing care plans and continuity of care across services. You will: - Take responsibility for those patients seen by yourself, together with those patients seen by medical staff supervised by them. - The expectation is that advice can be provided for patients from the age or 16 years upwards, and appropriate support and training can be provided if needed. CAMHS professionals are always available for advice and are consulted for all patients seen who are under 16 years. - With consultant colleagues, as clinical leads, providing oversight and post-hoc feedback to on-call medical staff working in EDPS. - Provide senior clinical advice to non-medically qualified clinical staff in the team and review patients seen by them if necessary. - Take responsibility for managing complex patients particularly where there are significant risks of harm, with the expectation of appropriate risk-taking when necessary. - Undertake Mental Health Act assessments on patients assessed by EDPS where necessary, which are required to be in-person, and this may mean travelling to the Horton Hospital for this purpose. - Contribute to MDT meetings across the system where appropriate/necessary including risk panels, discharge planning meetings from wards and multi-professional meetings in the community. Person Specification Qualifications - Fully registered with the General Medical Council - Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview) as an adult or liaison psychiatrist. - Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines) - Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act)/ Approved Clinician. This post is not suitable for a consultant who does not have s12 approval. - A higher degree such as MD or PhD - Additional clinical qualifications - In good standing with GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice - In good standing with RCPsych with respect to CPD. Knowledge - Experience of clinical work in liaison psychiatry or emergency psychiatry (e.g. CRHTT) at SpR, SAS/Specialist grade or consultant level. - Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act. - Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry - Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health - Experience of working at consultant level in a general hospital environment.
