Senior Project Cost Control Specialist

Location: Fly-in/Fly-out (FIFO) rotation to Kamloops, BC

Reports to: Manager, Cost Control (Functional Reporting Line)

Our large enterprise mining client is seeking a Senior Project Cost Control Specialist to support the successful delivery of a major capital project currently in the execution phase near Kamloops, British Columbia. This role is site-based and operates on a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) shift rotation schedule, providing direct support to the construction team during a critical phase of the project lifecycle.

As a key member of the Project Controls team, the successful candidate will be accountable for the planning, implementation, and ongoing management of project cost control systems, processes, and reporting. This role ensures cost control standards are rigorously applied throughout all project phases, aligning with the organization’s overall project controls framework.

Key Responsibilities

- Act as a safety leader by adhering to and promoting company safety and environmental standards.
- Support the development and execution of project cost control strategies, either individually or through the direction of consultants.
- Develop and review project cost control management plans from internal teams and service providers.
- Prepare and apply project-specific procedures aligned with the Project Procedures Manual and setup requirements.
- Ensure the corporate cost control standards are properly applied across all phases of the project.
- Manage the project budget, accruals, and cost data using cost management systems (e.g., Unifier).
- Align and maintain consistency between the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Code of Accounts (COA), and cost elements.
- Review vendor and contractor invoices for scope accuracy and cost compliance.
- Support the development of Appropriation Requests (ARs), including cost summaries and cash flow visuals.
- Develop and maintain project cost forecasts in alignment with approved budgets.
- Implement and track cost change management (trending and forecasting) to assess impacts on the project baseline.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive commitment, incurred cost, and cash flow data.
- Apply earned value and productivity measurement methodologies for performance analysis.
- Lead the development and reporting of the project contingency strategy.
- Prepare detailed monthly cost reports and presentations for internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Project Accounting and Business Unit Finance to support project capitalization and financial reporting.
- Compile and archive key project cost control documentation for inclusion in corporate project databases.

Qualifications and Experience

- Degree or diploma in engineering, accounting, finance, business, or a skilled trade discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of project cost control experience, preferably on large-scale mining or industrial capital projects.
- A significant portion of experience should be within an Owner’s organization, with more than 3 years in that capacity.
- Minimum 1 year of field/site-based experience.
- Strong knowledge of project management principles and project controls methodologies.
- Familiarity with all project lifecycle stages, from studies to execution.
- Proficient in cost control systems such as Unifier, PRISM, or Cleopatra (asset).
- Experience with scheduling tools like Primavera P6 or MS Project (asset).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Professional certifications such as CPA, P.Eng., AScT, CCP, CEP, or PMP are considered assets.
