Regional Director Credit (Underwriting Execution) - Canadian Commercial Banking
Purpose
The Regional Director leads and oversees the team of Credit experts in their designated Commercial Banking Region ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.
The Regional Director, Credit is responsible for contributing to the achievement of defined goals for Commercial through the profitable growth and the quality of the Commercial portfolio by overseeing the end to end delivery of Commercial Credit, ensuring unique lending solutions are properly structured, priced and negotiated, engaging in new business initiatives in market and coaching (Sr.) Credit Solutions Managers and Team Lead, Credit. The incumbent will oversee the completion of complex lending deals within a designated portfolio and geography. The role has responsibility for the achievements of their team, the team's overall financial objectives, and contributing to the assigned Region's overall financial objectives.
Through advanced knowledge of customized commercial lending, and risk management, the incumbent will oversee and direct the overall credit underwriting activity by developing the team's credit underwriting skills and acting as the Subject Matter Expert for Commercial within the region.
Accountabilities:
1. Leads and drives a client-driven culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
2. Lead and oversee team providing all end-to-end midmarket credit solution activities undertaken by the (Sr.) Client Solutions Manager(s)/Team Lead, Credit and their team(s) in the assigned region(s) by:
1. Maintaining expert knowledge of complex lending solutions, credit products and policies and guiding (Sr.) Credit Solutions Manager(s)/ Team Lead, Credit to proactively identify opportunities to apply these solutions.
2. Expanding the knowledge of (Sr.) Credit Solutions Manager(s)/ Team Lead, Credit around borrowing strategies; and enhancing teams overall underwriting capabilities and credit productivity for them to identify opportunities.
3. Managing the team's timely analysis, negotiation, structure, and presentation of lending solutions proposals.
4. Providing prompt and sound recommendations in the underwriting and adjudication of lending proposals.
5. Reviewing the quality of lending solutions and writings prepared by the (Sr.) Credit Solutions Manager(s)/ Team Lead, Credit to the Relationship Manager to ensure they clearly convey the rationale for decisions, so that they may respond effectively to clients.
6. Serving as the Subject Matter Expert to ensure team develops lending proposals that are properly analyzed, structured, negotiated, priced and presented with sound recommendations.
7. Providing guidance and direction in the recommendation of loan pricing and fees, yielding a return commensurate with risk, and due regard to complexity and uniqueness of the solution, overall value added to client, profit, administration and competitive considerations.
8. Oversee the recommendation of terms, conditions and covenants to provide a viable banking proposal within sound lending parameters, restructuring marginal and/or complex proposals, often under considerable time constraints.
9. Act as resource for guidance, coaching and counsel to Team Lead, Credit and (Sr.) Credit Solutions Manager(s) to enhance their credit analysis skills, so that they may better serve client needs.
4. Drive the adoption of best practices in the E2E credit process and portfolio review process, promoting efficiency and accuracy in credit evaluations and decisions by:
1. Representing Commercial Banking region in discussions with Global Risk Management regarding process improvements and efficiencies for Commercial loan adjudication.
2. Evaluating and identifying product gaps and new business opportunities.
3. Contributing to the development of new lending solutions, including preparation of proposals to gain Global Risk Management approval for new offerings, asset classes eligible for leverage, partnerships with third party asset managers or changes to existing offerings/policies.
4. Working with risk, legal, compliance, operations and technology teams to implement new offerings and policies.
5. Maintaining an awareness of competitor offerings and of complex client needs.
6. Identifying, developing and recommending additions/revisions to Lending Guidelines based on economic, industry, competitive, portfolio trends, as well as growth opportunities, commensurate to the Bank's risk appetite.
7. Providing timely performance feedback on lending solutions developed by the (Sr.) Credit Solutions Manager(s)/Credit Analyst(s).
8. Represent region on any working group to improve capabilities.
9. Providing input into, or recommending for approval, changes with respect to credit documentation, credit programs/products and manual job aids.
6. Managing the ongoing quality of the regional credit portfolio by:
1. Monitoring the assigned credit portfolio against risk and strategy parameters, ensuring that an effective system of review and follow-up is maintained for all accounts within the assigned portfolio.
2. Overseeing the proactive identification of problem loans and recommending appropriate provisions to Global Risk Management to minimize potential losses.
3. Advising VP of any credit weaknesses developing within individual accounts, by ongoing awareness and analysis of relevant financial, legal, political, technological, and industry information.
4. Recommending appropriate corrective action to minimize losses and maximize recoveries.
5. Directing (Sr.) Credit Solutions Manager(s)/Team Lead, Credit in the annual review process and detailing the evaluation of all information received for reporting purposes.
6. Monitoring and reviewing the management of credit within the segments and assigned portfolio, as reported through audits and reviews, and responding or taking action as appropriate, including alerting the VP to unsatisfactory trends.
7. Providing direction and support for unit audits and ensuring timely responses to any audit findings and sustainment of corrective activities.
8. Ensuring the team adheres to any regulatory and internal Bank policies including compliance requirements.
9. Ensuring the team's adherence to the Bank's Anti-Money Laundering program, Know Your Customer requirements and Guidelines for Business Conduct, by reporting any unusual occurrences or fraudulent activities per established procedures.
8. Collaborate with central credit enablement and key internal partners to align on strategic priorities by:
1. Ensuring uniformity in credit processes and portfolio management across region and raise training opportunities for credit staff to central team.
2. Ensuring consistent use of nCino application within their team, while providing feedback for improvement based on application within the field.
3. Working to embed consistent application of credit policies and guidelines across the region, maintaining high standards in credit quality and risk management.
10. Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vision/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team by:
1. Leading, coaching, guiding, and motivating the team to exceed contributions toward defined goals, and ensure collaborative relationship with Relationship Manager teams.
2. Fostering and developing a strong, positive team environment, driving employee empowerment, belonging, and a high degree of engagement.
3. Attracting and retaining top talent including effectively developing staff to meet operational needs of Commercial and longer-term requirements of the Bank.
4. Exhibiting an ability to listen, negotiate and communicate goals.
5. Sharing knowledge, experience, best practices, and responsibility with employees in a drive for the highest standards of professionalism.
6. Establishing & monitoring performance objectives and measures, and providing timely performance (& non-performance) feedback with regards to roles, tasks, and expectations.
7. Conduct effective performance assessments and make sound recommendations for career development and that employee development is a priority for all employees on the team.
8. Regularly scheduling one-on-one coaching with direct reports.
9. Identifying and supporting training and developmental needs of team members.
10. Managing staffing requirements and departmental workloads.
12. Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
13. Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
