Environmental Outreach Assistant - Environmental Monitoring Programs

Pay Grade: CAN/05/02/J03

Rate of Pay: $28.15 per hour; plus 14% in lieu of benefits

Hours of Work: 70 hours bi-weekly

The position provides environmental sampling services to various Environmental Protection programs with specific focus on summer recreational beach sampling. This position requires travel and sampling throughout the capital region.

The anticipated length of this term assignment is approximately 16-20 weeks.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1. Conducts surface water sampling at recreational beaches ensuring all sampling is carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures.
2. Under direction, assists with municipal wastewater, stormwater, groundwater, landfill leachate, odour, and marine/freshwater sediment sampling activities as necessary.
3. Completes field notes/sheets.
4. Submits samples to laboratories.
5. Verifies accuracy and completeness of information and data in laboratory reports.
6. Performs sample preparation and data entry tasks.
7. Uses scientific instruments and sampling equipment.
8. Represents the CRD in a professional and informed manner.
9. Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD.
10. Performs other related duties as required.

Key Skills & Abilities

1. Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
2. Knowledge of biological and chemical sampling, preservation, quality assurance procedures, in addition to experience in obtaining services from analytical laboratories and data verification, would be an asset.
3. Knowledge of local environmental protection issues and CRD programs and services.
4. Ability to operate scientific instruments and sampling equipment.
5. Knowledge of and ability to use various computer word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
6. Well-developed organizational skills.
7. Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team, respond to broad direction, and follow safety procedures.
8. Some heavy lifting is required.

Qualifications

1. High School Graduation
2. A minimum of six months' directly related experience
3. Post-secondary courses in a related discipline
4. An equivalent combination of education and experience

Certifications

1. Valid BC Driver's Licence
