Overview Position: Mechanical Designer Co-op and Mechanical Assembly Co-op Reports To: Engineering Manager and Mechanical Assembly Group Leader MechSmart Systems Inc (MSI), part of Innovative Automation Group of Companies, is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op Student and a Mechanical Assembly Co-op Student for the Winter 2026 term to work out of our Newmarket location. Responsibilities - Completes the mechanical design and detailing of fixtures, jigs, and smaller machines. Create mechanical designs that are economical to produce, easy to assemble and simply maintained - Assists other designers with the mechanical design and detailing of larger systems - Completes "as built" drawing updates on machinery when required, reviews updates/changes with the other departments when required - Manages all assigned tasks in a neat and timely fashion while striving to maintain budgeted hours - Communicate project concerns, project status, and design solutions with management, fellow staff and clients - Meet with design management and IAI sales representative to evaluate the design and ensure that design requirements are met - Use appropriate methods to generate and verify the design - Works in conjunction with the other members of the team, such as the electrical designer and the mechanical assembler/developer during all stages of machine design/build - Completes all required machine build drawings (drafting) as required - Generates Bill of Materials (BOM) for both purchased parts and raw manufactured materials as required - Assists other IAI personnel during the equipment build, observes and monitors how the build is progressing Occupational Health and Safety Act Responsibilities Workers have a general duty to protect their own health and safety and that of others around them. Workers must: - Work in compliance to the Act and Regulations - Use or wear any equipment, protective devices or clothing required by the employer - Not move or make ineffective any protective devices or clothing required by the employer - Report to the employer or supervisor any known hazards or missing or defective equipment or protective devices - Report any known violation of the Act or regulations to the employer or supervisor Workers should be proactive about health and safety. That means that workers must not only comply with the law, the employer's policies and workplace procedures, but they should also make suggestions to improve health and safety. Workers may also bring health and safety concerns and suggestions directly to the Joint Health and Safety Representative (Members names are listed on the Health and Safety Bulletin Board). Physical Demands This position may require frequent sitting. Working in the Mechanical Design department also requires constant cervical flexion, the chin to chest movement. Maximum lifting weight can reach about 50lbs, maximum carrying weight is about 40lbs, and the maximum pushing and pulling weights can reach 100-150lbs. Constant forward reach with both arms is necessary as well as frequent grasping. Working in this position requires a very strong ability to work alone and self-supervise as well a strongly established ability to supervise others. It also requires the ability to handle attention to detail, tight deadlines, responsibility and accountability as well as the ability to multi-task. Education Requirements and Experience Junior: - Enrolled in Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology - Provide Transcripts - Minimum 0-3 Years' Work Experience Skills are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions for all levels of this position #J-18808-Ljbffr
