Toronto, Canada Avvoka Limited Full time

- Backend Developer Lead - AI Solutions Architect

Backend Developer Lead - AI Solutions Architect

Join us in building the next generation of legal drafting technology.
We help teams move faster through complex contracts using automation, collaboration and AI — with lawyers firmly in control.

Trusted by leading law firms, banks and enterprises, we’ve grown rapidly through product strength and word of mouth. Now, we’re scaling from a product-led company into a global brand.

You’ll help shape the design, storytelling and experiences that define the next era of drafting.

Why Join Us

This is a rare opportunity to build the Avvoka brand from the ground up — not inherit it. You’ll be part of a small, ambitious team with the freedom to create, experiment and raise the bar for legal tech.

You’ll work alongside smart, supportive people who move fast and care deeply about quality. If you’re motivated by ownership, pace and visible impact, you’ll feel at home here.

The Role

We’re seeking a Backend Developer Lead – AI Solutions Architect to lead our AI team in integrating advanced AI solutions into our next-generation legal tech platform. You’ll architect, implement, and scale AI-driven features that directly impact our users, shaping both the technical direction of our product and the growth of the engineering team. This is a unique opportunity to combine deep backend expertise with AI innovation in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.

Department: AI
Primary Point of Contact: CTO

Location: Remote-first Hybrid (Prague 6)
Working Hours: 160h a month
Compensation: Competitive, based on experience
Start Date: Flexible — we’d love you to join soon

What You’ll Do

Architect solutions: Design and implement AI-powered features into our product.

Feature development: Build scalable backend systems that power AI functionality.

Innovation: Propose AI enhancements and improvements to elevate user experience.

Improve system performance and scalability

Optimization: Identify and address performance bottlenecks across AI and core backend systems.

Scalability planning: Build systems that scale with growing AI workloads and user demand.

Monitoring & troubleshooting: Leverage metrics and logs to proactively maintain system reliability.

Mentor and support the AI Solutions Team

Team leadership: Guide engineers through code reviews, workshops, and pair programming.

Knowledge sharing: Foster a culture of learning around AI integration and backend best practices.

Career growth: Support junior engineers in skill development and confidence building.

Collaborate across teams

Cross-functional planning: Partner with Product, Design, and AI teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.

Problem-solving: Drive discussions to resolve complex technical and product challenges.

Feedback loop: Help prioritize AI initiatives, technical debt, and feature requests for maximum impact.

What Success Looks Like

Significant improvements in system performance or AI feature response times

Successful delivery of AI-powered features on schedule

Leadership in mentoring, engineering best practices, and team development

What You’ll Bring

The ideal candidate would have:

Extensive experience with Ruby on Rails and backend architectures in production environments

Strong understanding of web applications, RESTful APIs, and database design

Hands‑on experience with AI integration, CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and cloud‑based deployments

Proven track record of performance optimization and scaling complex applications

You’ve worked in SaaS, legal tech, or highly regulated industries

You’ve contributed to open‑source projects or internal tooling

In addition to the technical and professional skills, there are certain core attributes we value across all roles:

Adaptability in dynamically evolving settings

A proactive, solution‑focused mindset with ownership

A collaborative spirit, supporting and mentoring others

💡 If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway — you might be just the candidate we’re looking for.

Our Hiring Process

CV Review: Our People team reviews all applications carefully.

Screening Call (15m): A quick virtual chat with our People team to learn more about you and answer any initial questions.

Stage 1 – Assessment Interview (30–45m): A virtual assessment interview with the Hiring Manager focused on your experience and approach.

Stage 2 – Senior Interview (for senior roles): An additional conversation with members of the leadership team.

Meet the Team: Where possible, we’ll invite shortlisted candidates to visit our WeWork Waterloo office to meet the wider team.

We aim to make an offer to the successful candidate within a month of application, but this will vary by role and seniority.

We are an equal opportunity employer that celebrates diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences - including those from underrepresented groups - and are happy to provide reasonable adjustments for candidates with disabilities during the recruitment process.
