Applications are invited for the position of Indigenous Academic & Learning Success Strategist in the Indigenous Education Division, located at the Welland and Daniel J. Patterson Campus, in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The starting hourly rate is $39.34/hr (Pay Band I - $39.34/hr to $45.59/hr) for a 35-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary. This is a temporary Initiatives/Opportunities position as per Article 17.3.1 of the Support Staff Collective Agreement and is set to conclude in February 2026.

Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Education, the successful candidate supports Indigenous students by creating a culturally responsive learning environment grounded in Indigenous pedagogy and epistemologies. They develop and deliver customized programs to enhance students' academic success, addressing unique academic and personal needs. The role involves collaboration with faculty, staff, and community members to integrate Indigenous knowledge systems into academic support services. They will also play a pivotal role in supplementary learning for students in Indigenous dual credit courses and in providing training in various academic skills tailored to students' needs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Provide one-on-one and group academic support to Indigenous students
- Assist students in navigating academic challenges while promoting holistic well-being
- Conducting intake appointments to assess student needs, strengths, and areas of improvement
- Offering additional instruction that integrates Indigenous ways of knowing and learning
- Employing best practices for instruction to transition students from learning skills application
- Focusing on study skills, including but not limited to metacognitive skills, analytic thinking, etc.
- Monitor interactions to help learners understand their impact and adjust their communication
- Build rapport and create a safe environment for students to express their concerns or difficulties
- Initiate follow-up sessions to maintain contact, monitor progress, and determine the next steps
- Remain current on learning styles, current instructional and assessment methods, Indigenous pedagogies, epistemologies, and culturally responsive practices
- Developing tailored materials that reflect diverse learning styles and cultural contexts
- Ensuring students are connected to the appropriate internal and external resources for support
- Monitoring and following up on student progress through collaborative case reviews

Qualifications:

- Minimum 3-year advanced diploma or degree
- Minimum of 3 years' experience providing academic support for Indigenous students
- A strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, values, traditions, and perspectives
- Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities faced by Indigenous students with an in-depth comprehension of educational barriers faced by diverse students, including students with accommodations, adult learners, etc.
- Excellent written communication, research, and reporting skills with high attention to detail
- Outstanding communication, organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Extensive knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, MS Teams, and Power Point)
- This position requires travel between both campuses
- The incumbent must be of Indigenous heritage (i.e. Turtle Island-First Nations Status and non-Status, Métis or Inuit) and have strong ties to the Indigenous community
