Job Summary & Requirements
As the Recreation Therapist, you enable patients to acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally and function independently with the least amount of assistance and participate as fully as possible in society. The Recreation Therapist provides programs and services that:
- Improve and maintain patients' skills and functional leisure abilities in the areas of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning.
- Assist patients in utilizing previously acquired leisure skills or acquire new leisure skills appropriate to their limitations and future lifestyle.
- Promote an awareness of the importance of a successful leisure lifestyle and the utilization of leisure resources within the home and community.
- Identify information and resources pertaining to physical and architectural barriers commonly found in the environment.
- Actively involve patients in the community to promote independence when returning to the home environment.
Minimum Requirements:
- Post graduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation.
- Minimum three years of acute mental health recreation therapy experience.
- Experience working with people with disabilities.
- Experience working with seniors.
- Experience in leading groups.
- Experience in planning special events.
- Experience working in a team setting.
- Experience working in a health care setting (charting, medical terminology, implications of disease, etc.).

- Critical thinking/problem-solving skills.
- Leadership skills.
