We are a small team on a big mission to plant 1 billion verified trees by 2030 with our community of businesses, planting organizations, and consumers who believe in the transformative power of verified restoration projects to create real and meaningful impact for the planet, nature, and people. We’re seeking a Director of Forestry to build and lead veritree’s forestry function. This role will shape how we source, onboard, and manage our global network of planting partners to deliver verified trees and world-class nature restoration outcomes. This role is both strategic and hands-on: you’ll establish the on-the-ground systems and standards that underpin our restoration projects today, while laying the foundation for a global forestry organization that can scale. As veritree grows, this role has the potential to expand into VP-level scope. 6-12 Month Key Outcomes: 1. A repeatable planting partner sourcing, vetting, onboarding and management engine is in place. 2. Planting partners continue to meet their planting and survivability targets as we scale tree planting commitments to >200 million trees/year. 3. Demonstrate and embed high-performance expectations within the Forestry team. Key Responsibilities: Build & Lead the Forestry Function - Manage and build strategies to support the diverse needs of a global portfolio of ecosystem restoration projects. - Establish and deploy clear standards, processes, and KPIs for sourcing, onboarding, and field operations. - Recruit, mentor, and manage a growing forestry team. - Collaborate closely with Revenue, Product, and Operations teams to align forestry operations with business needs. Partner Sourcing and Onboarding - Identify and evaluate new planting partners and geographies aligned with commercial demand and ecosystem impact. - Build a scalable approach to assessing and onboarding restoration opportunities in collaboration with local planting organizations, indigenous groups, and landowners. - Lead due diligence to ensure partners meet veritree’s quality, risk, and accountability standards. - Design and run onboarding and training programs for new partners, ensuring alignment with veritree’s systems and reporting protocols. Field Operations and Auditing - Oversee planting partner management to ensure planting, verification, and survivability targets are consistently met. - Maintain a deep understanding of project design considerations and develop monitoring systems and accountability frameworks to measure the ongoing performance of planting partners. - Work closely with Product & Engineering functions to ensure veritree technology supports the needs of current and future planting efforts. - Conduct audits of planting quality and enforce Master Services Agreements (MSAs). Quality, Standards and Reporting - Own veritree’s forestry standards, ensuring planting practices are science-based, verifiable, and consistent globally. - Oversee forestry data integrity to support accurate impact reporting and client communications. - Ensure compliance with internal and external standards, MSAs, and external frameworks (i.e., CSRD, TNFD). Requirements - Intellectual curiosity and a self-starter. - 10+ years in forestry, restoration, natural resource management, or related fields, including team leadership. - Expertise in reforestation, afforestation, or ecosystem restoration practices. - Understanding of the diverse landscape of global funding mechanisms for nature-based solutions, including philanthropy, carbon, biodiversity, payment for ecosystem services, reclamation/remediation, etc. - Demonstrated success in partner sourcing, onboarding, and performance management. - Experience designing accountability frameworks and conducting audits of restoration project performance. - Competency with forestry technologies (experience with MRV technology is a plus). - Strong commercial acumen. - Proven experience building and managing teams. - Excellent communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills. - Ability to travel internationally to planting sites. - Ambition to grow into VP scope as veritree scales globally.
