The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Roadway Maintenance Inspector I to join our Parks and Roads Services team. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for ensuring the quality and compliance of contracted work, contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of our City's infrastructure. As a Roadway Maintenance Inspector I, you will provide inspection and monitoring services for a variety of contracted work within Parks and Roads Services. Your responsibilities will include inspecting contracted work related to snow and ice control, snow removal, street cleaning, concrete sidewalk elevation, and various other maintenance activities. You will monitor contractors to ensure adherence to specifications, verify work goals, and document inspections. This role is essential for quality control and assurance of contracted maintenance and operational programs. You will also address any deficient work and ensure that safety and environmental guidelines are followed.
What will you do?
- On-site inspection and monitoring of contracted work to ensure compliance with contract specifications and City of Edmonton standards
- Preparation of daily reports on program progress and verification of payment quantities
- Coordination of hired equipment and City of Edmonton manpower to support contracted work
- Follow-up with contractors on deficiencies and production shortfalls
- Act as the primary contact for contracted staff and a liaison for City departments and customers
- Ensure adherence to City of Edmonton policies, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) guidelines, and environmental policies
- Review new sites/routes to verify and quantify City-maintained areas
- Identify site concerns and communicate them to the Inspector 2 and Roadway Maintenance Supervisor
- Communicate with contracted employees to review expectations and resolve site-specific issues
- Inspect sites/routes seasonally or at contract conclusion to identify and report contractor-related damage
- Inspect work sites to determine outstanding work
- Report and forward any work outside the contract scope
- Identify, record, and forward site/route changes to the Contract Technologist
- Arranging necessary permits for contracted work
- Arrange for material testing as required
- Ensure traffic/safety controls are in place
- Respond to citizen inquiries/complaints on-site
- Communicate with contact managers within the City of Edmonton and external agencies
- Schedule and coordinate work with contractors to avoid conflicts
- Ensure appropriate notification is provided to all parties affected by projects
- Other duties as required
Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- 3 years related to roadway maintenance and operational activities
Assets:
- Inspection and/or crew supervision would be considered an asset
- Experience in a municipal or public sector environment
- Knowledge of Edmonton's roadway infrastructure
- Familiarity with the City of Edmonton's Design and Construction Standards
- Completion of relevant courses from NAIT or equivalent training from an accredited institution:
- Soil Mechanics
- Effective Communications I
- Pavement Materials Testing
- Roadbuilders Certification
Skills required for success:
- Demonstrated ability to effectively and tactfully communicate both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to address concerns and issues related to contractor supervision, 311 complaints and external communications (partners, citizens, etc.)
- Ability to implement and ensure compliance with the City's policies and procedures
- Ability to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful, and safe manner
- Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions
- Ability to utilize software for the completion of reports, records, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to perform routine mathematical calculations without error
- Ability to prioritize tasks and ensure all tasks are completed per work plan
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment
- Ability to critically analyze issues to make decisions, recommend viable and effective solutions and summarize and manage information
- Extensive knowledge of best practices/standard methods
- Extensive knowledge of practices, materials, tools, equipment, and other disciplines related to the operational area
- Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso and WHMIS, Design & Construction Standards, Snow & Ice Control, etc.

Conditions of Employment:
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
- This position involves a combination of fieldwork and office work
- Field work will involve exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, precipitation, and other environmental factors
- The role may also involve exposure to hazards such as noise, dust, and traffic
