Project purpose and goals

We are currently seeking an education consultant who identifies as Anishinābeg Algonquin to create an Educator Guide to share and deepen the teachings from a documentary film currently in development on the construction of a birch bark canoe with Indigenous youth (see our Blog for more information). The Educator Guide and documentary film will be shared on Ottawa Riverkeeper's website as free digital resources for teachers.

The consultant will lead a process to co-create the Educator Guide in consultation with community knowledge holders, youth canoe builders, and Ottawa Riverkeeper staff. The consultant will provide training for Ottawa Riverkeeper's Educators to ensure staff understand how to respectfully share the content and pedagogical approaches of the Educator Guide in our educational programs and workshops, including the interpretive messaging at the Learning Lab where the canoe will be displayed at the NCC River House.

Budget and scope of work

Payable to consultant:

- $8,000 consultant fee

Additional project expenses:

- Up to $1,500 for honoraria for consultations with knowledge holders, youth, and community members
- Up to $1,000 to reimburse travel and accommodations

Consultant's deliverables (percentage = approximate time to be spent on the activity):

- Write the Educator Guide (Grades 5+) that accompanies the birch bark canoe building documentary with discussion/inquiry questions, curriculum connections, extension activities, additional relevant content to deepen knowledge, and protocols for educators to respectfully share Anishinābeg Algonquin knowledge (60%)
- Consult

- Knowledge holders, community members, and youth to complement and deepen culturally relevant teachings related to the canoe building project

- Ottawa Riverkeeper staff (educators, scientists) to weave together Anishinābeg Algonquin knowledge and western scientific knowledge to teach about the health of the watershed (25%)

- Train Ottawa Riverkeeper's Educators how to respectfully integrate the Educator Guide into school program workshops and interpretive messaging at the Learning Lab where the canoe is displayed (10%)
- Provide feedback on the documentary film about the birch bark canoe building process and themes (currently in post-production) (5%)

Submission Criteria

A submission must include the following elements:

- A curriculum vitae (CV)
- A cover letter with one to two paragraphs describing the consultant's vision for creating the Educator Guide and a statement about the consultant's Indigenous identity, specifically in relation to the Anishinābeg Algonquin Nation.

Note: We will be giving preference to selecting an Indigenous education consultant that identifies as Anishinābeg Algonquin.
