Our Data Engineering team is seeking a motivated technical leader to join us as Sr. Architect. As an Architect, you will work with a diverse team of highly collaborative and skilled Data Engineers, Full Stack Developers, DBAs, Cloud Engineers, Healthcare Professionals & last but not least AI/ML Engineers. With your strong background in data engineering you will enable complex data engineering projects for TELUS Health that entails designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines and systems that support our healthcare data initiatives.

What you’ll do

- Design and govern enterprise data architecture for the FHIR4 Extract Pipeline, ensuring scalability, performance, and compliance with healthcare regulations (HIPAA, PIPEDA)

- Lead architectural decisions for Apache Pyspark and Apache Flink-based streaming platforms processing millions of clinical records from MedAccess EMR, laboratory systems, and clinical devices

- Establish data governance frameworks for FHIR R4 standardization and healthcare data interoperability across diverse EMR systems

- Drive cloud-native architecture strategies leveraging Google Cloud Platform services (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, GKE, Healthcare API, Managed Kafka and others) for healthcare data platforms

- Architect or refine/optimise existing complex streaming data pipelines using Apache Flink, Kafka, and Ibis dataframes to transform healthcare data into standardised FHIR R4 resources

- Lead evaluation and optimisation of existing data lake architectures in AWS and GCP (technologies including BigQuery, Parquet, Apache Iceberg and more) and continuous evaluation, experimentation and suggestion of new modern data lake architectures

- Design/implement microservices architectures with Docker containerisation and Kubernetes orchestration using Flink Kubernetes Operator for cloud-native deployment patterns

- Champion observability and monitoring frameworks using Datadog, Dynatrace, Google Cloud Monitoring, AWS Cloudwatch for healthcare-critical data processing

- Guide and cultivate high-performing data engineering teams specialising in Pyspark, Flink, and healthcare data transformation

- Partner with clinical stakeholders to guarantee FHIR compliance, precise clinical data, and seamless healthcare workflow integration

- Orchestrate cross-functional projects involving healthcare IT professionals, data scientists, and clinical experts

- Establish technical standards for schema management, evolution strategies, and healthcare data governance

- Direct technical development leveraging AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Cline, RooCode, or Kilo Code

What you bring

- Degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field

- 10+ years of experience in Data management

- Modern development practices using AI-assisted coding tools and advanced Python ecosystem management

- Expertise in designing, building, and optimising large-scale data pipelines using ETL/ELT processes

- Advanced PySpark, Kafka, Flink ecosystem knowledge: Complex event processing, stateful stream processing, advanced streaming patterns and optimisation knowledge

- Proven experience with data modelling, schema design, and data warehousing concepts

- Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, and data security principles

- Hands‑on experience with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, and NoSQL databases

- Familiarity with data visualisation tools and reporting frameworks

Great-to-haves

- Masters or PhD in computer science, computer engineering or related field

- Healthcare AI/ML architecture experience including clinical decision support systems and population health analytics

- Google Cloud or AWS Professional Data Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect certifications

- Apache Flink or Kafka professional certifications

- Healthcare informatics certifications (CAHIMS, CPHIMS)

Salary Range: $103,000-$155,000

Performance Bonus or Sales Incentive Plan: 15%
