We are currently seeking a permanent, full‑time Senior Staff Accountant to join our Head Office Accounting team. The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the financial integrity of the BIG Group of Companies. This position blends hands‑on, full‑cycle accounting with leadership, mentorship, and process oversight. You’ll support accurate and timely financial reporting, oversee critical accounting workflows (including commissions), and help guide a collaborative accounting team—all while working closely with internal stakeholders across the organization.

What does the Senior Staff Accountant do?

As the Senior Staff Accountant you will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and consistency of financial operations across the BIG Group of Companies. This role combines hands‑on, full‑cycle accounting with workflow oversight, mentorship, and cross‑functional collaboration to support timely reporting, compliance, and continuous improvement. You’ll act as a trusted financial partner within the organization while helping guide and support the accounting team. In this role, you will:

- Oversee daily accounting workflows to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and consistency.

- Manage full‑cycle accounting, including commissions, A/P, A/R, and month‑end close.

- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial reports.

- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure data integrity across entities.

- Support audit preparation and respond to auditor requests.

- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and internal policies.

- Act as a key contact for commission‑related inquiries and accounting support requests.

- Use QuickBooks and financial systems effectively, recommending improvements as needed.

- Mentor and support team members to promote collaboration and development.

- Contribute to process improvements and special projects as required.

Qualifications

- Post‑secondary education in Accounting, Bookkeeping, Finance, or a related field.

- Minimum 3 years of experience in a finance or accounting role.

- Minimum 1 year of experience mentoring or overseeing finance administration processes.

- Strong proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks or similar) & Microsoft Excel.

- Previous experience in the insurance industry (an asset).

- CPA designation or currently working toward CPA certification (an asset).

- Salary Band 5: $62,000‑$79,000

- Target Hiring Range $62,000 - $66,000
