Working under the supervision of medical laboratory technologists, pathologists, or combined laboratory & x-ray technologists, laboratory assistants assist with and perform routine laboratory procedures and ensure the smooth operation of the laboratory.

This may include administrative tasks such as covering reception or completing reports on lab activities or performing routine testing procedures, collecting, and sorting specimens.

Medical laboratory assistant certificate

- Collecting blood specimens using macro and micro phlebotomy techniques
- Collecting and sorting specimens, and performing limited testing procedures such as loading analyzers, specialized plating, and urinalysis
- Transporting and receiving specimens
- Calibrate, maintain, and trouble-shoot instruments
- Assist with inventory and reporting, including quality control and daily activities
- Input and analyze data

Make a Difference

- Help patients, physicians, and health professionals get the information they need for an accurate diagnosis
- Help patients and physicians monitor and manage ongoing health concerns
- Assist physicians in preventative and pre-emptive treatment of disease
- Collect data for public health surveillance
- Work both independently and collaboratively with laboratory assistants, laboratory technologists, laboratory scientist, supervisors, and other healthcare professionals
- Work in a variety of different locations including hospitals, diagnostic testing laboratories, clinics, and research centres
