The Responsible Adult provides a shishalh culturally rich outdoor education program for children aged 3 to 5 years old. Our shishalh approach to education incorporates an inquiry‑driven, play‑based foundation and uses children’s interests to direct our emergent curriculum. In addition, we provide a culturally rich learning experience that connects our children with our community and the rich natural landscapes that surround us.

The Responsible adult will assist educators in providing quality, inclusive childcare programming and supervision for young children in a group setting. This position will be responsible for guiding and instructing children in various educational subjects and life skills. Additionally, the Responsible Adult will assist children in nurturing their developmental and cognitive skills, including physical, mental, and social development. This position performs other tasks as assigned and as directed by the immediate supervisor.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Programming

- Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities.

- Carry out a daily activity schedule as directed by the ECE Teacher.

- Help the ECE Teacher organize space, equipment, and materials before activities.

- Assist children in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions or comments that extend and build upon their provocations.

- Encouraging children’s development of positive self‑concept or self‑regulation.

- Using appropriate guiding and caring for individuals and groups of children from 3 to 5 years of age.

- Providing care and education for each child (e.g., setting up snacks, keeping a detailed log of each child’s day).

- Responsible Adult will work with ECE Teachers on weekly tasks based on the project approach.

- Use a variety of teaching techniques, including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.

- Encourage and assist children in practicing self‑help skills daily.

- Maintain equipment and assist with housekeeping duties, such as keeping the classroom organized, clean, and tidy, and cleaning up after activities.

Follow Licensing and Regulations

- Ensuring the health and safety of all the children.

- Adhering to all the Operating Policies.

- Ensure you are following the ECE Code of Ethics, the BC Early Learning Framework, and the Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework.

- Ensure that you are meeting the required federal and provincial regulations and licensing requirements for the Centre.

- Ensure you are following the HR Policy Manual.

- Maintain confidentiality at all times regarding children, staff and anything to do with the shíshálh Nation.

Reporting

- Report any concerns or suggestions to mem7iman manager (in writing).

- Report any concerns or issues to your direct supervisor and follow the appropriate reporting guidelines.

- The Responsible Adult will document daily activities through photos, observations, and reflections.

- Documentation of children’s learning and reflective practices is logged daily.

Relationships and Communication with Key Stakeholders

- Works closely with ECE Teachers and the Manager.

- Collaborate with other staff members to foster a positive and supportive team atmosphere.

- Ability to maintain a healthy working relationship with staff, community representatives/members, parents and representatives of other organizations.

- Work effectively as a member of the MCDC team.

- Will work with ECE Teachers on parent‑teacher meetings and any updates on the child.

- Willingness to work in other classrooms as deemed appropriate by the Management, depending on the needs of the Centre.

- Participate in the annual Open House and other family events at the school.

- Participate in professional development (a minimum of 15 hours per year is required).

- Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

- Responsible Adult Certificate (or in the process of completing).

- At least 1 year of experience in a daycare setting

- Valid CPR and First Aid certificate.

- Knowledge and understanding of the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Child Care Licensing Regulations.

- Knowledge and understanding of the development of children and their mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs.

- Knowledge and appreciation of shishalh Culture and how culture impacts the development of young children.

- Excellent Communication skills and both oral and written.

- Understanding of cross‑cultural issues that impact shishalh people and First Nation communities.

- High level of energy and patience.

- Clear criminal record Check with vulnerable sectors

- Medical Clearance and Immunization Record on file.

- Minimum of 2 work‑related references.

- Ability to work closely in a team environment.

- Excellent communication skills with the ability to listen and respond appropriately.

- Strong work ethic.

- Sensitivity and respect for individual and cultural differences.

- Must be physically able to sit, climb, kneel or crouch and be able to lift/ move at least 25 pounds.
