To provide feminist (intersectional)-based compassionate and innovative daily supports, counselling, and therapeutic/activity-based group programing for parents and caregivers and their children living in the shelter. To work with each caregiver to assess and plan for the child(ren)’s safety, educational, counselling, parenting and legal supports needs/requirements. This will include but is not limited to, providing support and system navigation/advocacy for caregivers who are accessing/intersecting with community/health services (mental health, Child Welfare, childcare, education, and etcetera). To prevent, manage, and support any parent and child social/behavioral/emotional/mental health issues that arise within the shelter. To create and foster a healthy and safe environment for all residents and children. To develop strong partnership with children-based services and to provide public presentations from time to time.

- Build resiliency with children and youth by providing daily, individual support, and group programming.
- Work collaboratively within the direct service team to assess the needs of individual children, families, and caregivers.
- Provide consultation, support, and education to individuals and families.
- Demonstrate healthy behavior management techniques appropriate to each child’s developmental stage and ability.
- Complete safety assessments and explore risk management strategies with women and children.
- Provide childminding to families in shelter and assist with making childcare referrals.
- Develop and implement supportive and engaging programming for children and youth.
- Connect families with community supports through appropriate referrals.

- **QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED**_

Education: 3-year Child and Youth Worker (CYC) - required/preferred or diploma or undergraduate degree in Social Service Work/Social Work (from recognized University/College) or related child/youth disciplines preferred.

Experience: Minimum two (2) years’ experience working in children’ services and preference to residential setting and/or crisis work.

Experience with group facilitation and program planning. Experience working with high-risk parents and working with Stages of Change, gender-based violence intersectionality lens/model, motivational interviewing, trauma informed, strength
- based counseling an asset.

Working knowledge of child developmental stages.

Other: Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Records Police Check, valid First Aid/CPR +AED Certification, valid ASIST Certification, valid CPI/NVCI Certification, Danger Assessment Certification, Stages of Change training/certification, valid Bill 168 Certification, valid Bill 132 Certification, valid Food Safe Handling Certification, valid WHMIS Certification, valid Ontario driver’s license, road worthy vehicle with 2 million liability insurance OR the ability to meet all travel requirements of the position. Member of Association for Child and Youth and/or College of SW/SSW, bi-lingual or a second language an asset.

- **WORKING ENVIRONMENT/WORK HAZARDS**_

This is an emergency residential crisis setting where women who have experienced abuse, with or without children reside for a short time frame. Employees are responsible for creating a friendly, inclusive (nondiscriminatory), compassionate and cohesive environment and will implement strategies to ensure a healthy, safe, and supportive environment is maintained.

The setting is fast paced with constantly changing priorities and crisis. Most of the work time will be working directly (formally/informally) with clients in fluid, non-office setting. Extended period of informal client work will be liaising/advocating with community/stakeholder services. Thus, workplace hazards will include listening to traumatic experiences, exposure to barriers/conflict with lack of services and supports for women who have experienced abuse. Additionally, it will include preventing, defusing, and managing clients and/or community services whose behaviors are aggressive, discriminatory, or despondent towards staff and/other women and/or children living in the shelter.

Additionally, abusive persons may attempt to access the helter/programs. At times, when staff are working in the community they will be exposed to negative attitudes and beliefs and bias towards women and their children who have experienced abuse. Personal Safety plans must always
