Theatres at UWaterloo hosts a series of performances developed by faculty, students, visiting artists, and independent productions from across the GTA; and in co-operation with the Federation of Students among other on-campus organizations, presents many university-based events. Our venues are also available for rental to community groups, such as local dance schools and cultural organizations, private events, and to a variety of companies which host conferences and lectures. Live entertainment is available throughout the year in the university’s three attractive facilities: Humanities Theatre (721-seat, proscenium, fly house), Theatre of the Arts (406-seat thrust stage), and Studio 180 (55-seat black box studio). We explore theatre and performance in a wide range of contexts.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

This is a part-time/casual position and will liaise with clients, professionals and community performing arts groups on matters of a technical nature in a safe and efficient manner, to ensure superior customer service as it relates to load-in, performance set up, running of performances/events and load-out across three venues. We are looking for individuals at various levels of experience and skillsets in all live theatre related areas. The position will report to the Technical Coordinator(s) and Technical Director.
General duties include:

- Responsible for hands-on technical work including lighting, audio, special effects, staging, carpentry, video, loading in/out, and maintenance of theatrical equipment. You will work with clients, professionals, university staff, and community performing arts groups to ensure a flawless execution of performances and events.
- Design and implement lighting, audio, set, rigging and video for various productions and events.
- Perform regular preventative maintenance to theatre systems, tools and equipment including lighting, sound, rigging, carpentry, video, staging, while maintaining an inventory of all assets.
- Lighting: Programming and operating ETC ION lighting control systems; hang, patch and focus conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures. Operate follow spots. Install and program DMX based control systems. Create effective lighting for dance, theatre, musical theatre, and all types of live concerts and events. Troubleshoot and maintaining lighting related elements. Set up, operate, and troubleshoot video projection and live streaming. Program and operate A/V playback systems such as QLab for theatrical use.
- Audio: Set up and operation of mixing consoles, microphones, effects and dynamics processing, playback devices, amplifiers, and speaker systems. Troubleshoot, operate, and mix sound for various events including theatrical performances, musical theatre, spoken words, music concerts, dance competitions, etc. Set up, operate, and troubleshoot video projection and live streaming. Program and operate A/V playback systems such as QLab for theatrical use.
- Stage: Set up scenery and staging for all types of events. Repair scenic elements, rig flying scenery, operate single purchase fly system, and perform scene changes for all types of events, as well as assist in all on-stage technical requirements from clients and theatre staff.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and removing garbage from stage and surrounding areas.
- The position will require a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

**SELECTION CRITERIA**

**EDUCATION**
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
- Must have a minimum of six months of relevant experience in a theatrical environment, or a two-year college diploma, or university degree in Technical Theatre, Performing Arts or similar, to operate lighting, sound, special effects, and/or counterweight systems for live productions.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. Training and certifications may be provided to those who require it and at the discretion of the employer.
