**A Day in the Life **
Reporting to the Director, Health, Safety, & Wellness, the Occupational Health & Safety Specialist assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of a broad spectrum of Health, Safety, and Wellness programs. The Specialist also provides professional resources and expertise on occupational health and safety-related topics for maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
**As the** **Occupational Health & Safety Specialist, you will**:
- Liaise with the responsible parties to assist in investigating workplace injuries, accidents and near misses; assist in preparing recommendations for prevention and ensure implementation of corrective actions;
- Assess, evaluate and monitor potential workplace hazards; provide hazard control and mitigation strategies;
- Ensure campus-wide compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant Regulations such as the First Aid Regulation 1101.
- Provide recommendations to the acquisition of occupational health & safety equipment and personal protective equipment;
- Recruit, coordinate and maintain the Emergency Warden System to facilitate safe evacuations and support other emergency response activities, in conjunction with Campus Security Services;
- Assist in the maintenance of the violence prevention program and conduct violence allegation investigations in coordination with appropriate parties;
- Act as main contact to regulatory bodies (e.g. Ministry of Labour), distribute and follow up on legislative directives;
- Coordinate, facilitate and provide advice/guidance to the University’s Joint Health & Safety Committees;
- Ensure the content of HSW web pages and bulletin boards are maintained and kept up-to-date;
- Assist in the development of comprehensive health, safety and wellness programs by conducting research, gathering relevant industry information and drafting program development plans for the Director, Health, Safety & Wellness to review;
- Implement HSW programs campus-wide or department-specific to ensure stakeholder knowledge of legislation, regulations, standards, and responsibilities regarding occupational health and safety.
**What you need to Succeed**
- A college diploma or university degree in health and safety, human resources, or relevant discipline. Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- 4+ years of relevant experience in occupational health & safety, including demonstrated success working with multiple stakeholders and a strong understanding of the complexity and potential hazards associated with a diverse University environment;
- Knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act, and all relevant legislation;
- Ability to stay abreast of industry developments, relevant legislation, and regulations;
- Strong presentation skills and ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders;
- Project management experience and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects from conception to implementation and work effectively with employees at all levels;
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills;
- Ability to interact effectively with a diverse population at all levels;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.
**Salary and Benefit Information**
- Job Grade (K), Salary Scale ($62,580-$107,280)*;
- Target Hiring Range: $62,580 - $70,000
- This is a 12-month fixed-term contract with benefits.
