Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Laboratory of Archaeology (LOA) Technician (CUPE 116 Salaried - Research Assistant /Technician Level 3) is to provide day-to-day technical and research support for LOAs researchers, collections, laboratories, and equipment. This position requires safe chemical handling knowledge gained through experience working in a chemical or molecular lab. The incumbent must adhere to protocols provided to LOA by First Nation partners. The incumbent takes direction from the LOA Manager and Director, and plans and performs tasks relating to laboratories, safety, training, and field equipment utilizing varied procedures and incorporating multiple complex guiding principles and voices including First Nations, provincial regulations, the LOA unit and department. Tasks are assigned and discussed regularly with the LOA Manager, however, the incumbent plans and schedules their own work. The incumbent requires good organizational skills to coordinate and complete assigned projects whether working alone or with a team. The work demands planning the sequence of duties and methods in consultation with the LOA Manager and Director. The LOA Technician must exercise judgement based on a thorough knowledge of guidelines, procedures, and regulations in making decisions.

Organizational Status

Relevant to tasks, the LOA Technician reports to the LOA Manager who organizes work with the LOA Director and faculty. The technician interacts and liaises with the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Anthropology, Museum of Anthropology, and visitors from other academic and governmental institutions, First Nations communities, archaeological consulting industries. Work is supervised by the LOA Manager and is reviewed in terms of achievement of general and specific goals. This individual will be responsible for daily activities in the LOA labs, will ensure that collections, supplies, and facilities are prepared for users and that samples and collections are correctly stored and equipment is maintained. The LOA Technician will demonstrate efficiency and timeliness in all tasks assigned to them. The LOA Technician performs most duties independently or with student assistants working under their supervision.

Work Performed

The technician would be responsible for monitoring daily, chemical and ergonomic safety and undertaking experiments in LOA laboratory facilities in the Anthropology and Sociology building (ANSO), Museum of Anthropology (MOA), and Iona building (IONA), and ensuring that laboratory safety procedures are up to date and that appropriate safety training is undertaken by users. The laboratory facilities include the full suite of LOA research and teaching laboratories in ANSO and MOA, including the GIS Laboratory, Geoarchaeology Laboratory, Microscope Laboratory, Ancient DNA and Proteins (ADαPT) Facility and Multispecies Laboratory (MSAL).

Typical Duties

This position involves monitoring and ordering consumables and other supplies to support research activities in the labs, supervising and sitting on appropriate safety committees, communications regarding sample processing and status, responding to service-for-fee requests and queries, providing access to LOA spaces for First Nations, researchers and volunteers, repository archaeological materials and supplies receiving when required. The Technician:
Works effectively with LOA team to accomplish goals. Plans daily work to accomplish tasks assigned by LOA Manager and create schedules including UBC Work Learn students as needed.

Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and First Nations protocols in laboratories; updates technical and chemical safety manuals and inventories, and coordinates the production of page updates once approved by the LOA Manager.

Updates the LOA Emergency Preparedness Plan. Evaluates hazards and ergonomics for lab workers.

Participates in the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the LOA laboratories and equipment, including set
