Notes:

The Culturally Responsive (CR) Mentor reports to the Coordinator of Diversity Services and works collaboratively with the Coordinator, the other CR Mentor/Coach and as a member of the CRP Lead Team to advance Culturally Responsive assessment and instructional practices.
The CR Mentor/Coach’s focus will include, but is not limited to, providing timely, intensive support to schools identified as priority schools, as well as schools previously identified within our CCRCE Achievement Gap Initiative. The CR Mentor/Coach assists the Coordinator through ongoing effective monitoring and strategic analysis of the status of students with identified learning gaps, and collaboratively works with the staffs to effectively serve the needs of these students. The Mentor/Coach will play a key role in school-based professional learning activities, based on school and teacher need.
The Mi’kmaw Cultural Coach assists the Regional Centre in improving Mi’kmaw student learning in all schools by supporting the school community in strengthening culturally relevant practices and creating a school environment that is inclusive and reflective of cultural diversity.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Coordinator of Mi'kmaw Education Services and in collaboration with the Mi’kmaq Services Branch (MSB), within the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) shall be responsible to:

- Assist teachers, school-based administrators, and various personnel/positions within the school system on cultural perspectives and helping schools to reflect cultural diversity.
- Provide support, planning and facilitation to teachers and principals within the Treaty Education framework established by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
- Grow and support opportunities for weaving Mi’kmaw ways of being and knowing into the expectations and practices of regional students well-being and success.
- Supporting teachers in implementing the concepts of Etuaptmumk, Netukulimk, land-based learning and Treaty Education into all curriculum. Work in classrooms with teachers to improve each teacher’s classroom-based instruction and assessment practices to benefit all students with a focus on Indigenous/Mi’kmaq learners.
- As needed, attend staff, community, and other meetings relevant to position such as ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Interpret and respond to school, region, and provincial data for Grades P-12 to improve instruction and student achievement, including support of Student Success Planning, collaborative teams and teaching support teams.
- Work directly with schools, the Coordinator of Mi’kmaw Education/Services and Mi'kmaq communities to strengthen relationships between Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education and the people of Indigenous/Mi’kmaq descent throughout the region.
- Travel throughout the region and to work outside of regular school hours to accomplish the goals of the position.
- Help to identify needs as well as gaps in services for students and assist in arranging initiatives for Indigenous/Mi’kmaq students.
- Develop and conduct workshops and presentations to staff and students, at times in collaboration with other regional staff members that aligns with the Nova Scotia Inclusive Education Policy (2019). The PD will be used to guide and support provincial, and regional goals of positive inclusion, well-being, and academic success for Mi’kmaw/Indigenous students in the public system.
- Assist in obtaining appropriate cultural resources within the region’s educational system.
