Reporting to the Manager of Clinical Education, the Clinical Scholars are experienced nurses with frontline experience who are employed in supernumerary positions to provide formalized mentorship to newly graduated nurses to support their transition into the workforce, Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and nurses seeking to upskill to aid transition into the nursing workforce.

The Clinical Scholars are responsible for the successful implementation of the Clinical Scholar program mandate by supporting novice learners in their practice and integration into care areas in accordance with college standards, policies and procedures, and in collaboration with the clinical teams. The Clinical Scholars guide and support the novice learner in providing high quality, safe care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. The Clinical Scholars serve as a liaison and conduit between novice learners and between unit leadership.

Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) practice as members of a multi-disciplinary team in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act, the Regulated Health Professions Act, the Nursing Act, and the Standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). In keeping with the Hospital’s Mission, Vision and Values, and policies and procedures, RPN’s provide professional nursing care to patients.
- RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide mentorship to new nurses supporting their transition into the workforce, new nurses include nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses looking to upskill.
- Provide on-unit support for above noted groups and professional development activities.
- Supporting unit leadership in competency evaluations, reporting concerns to unit leadership.
- Participate in data collection and reporting requirements as per ministry requirements for the Clinical Scholars program
- Ensures the delivery of professional nursing care by utilizing evidence-based practice.
- Demonstrate critical thinking in the nursing process while collecting and interpreting data, planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of nursing care.
- Practicing to the full scope of practice of the Registered Nurse within own level of competence.
- Has the knowledge, skill and judgment needed to guide competent, evidence-based nursing practice that complies with the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Practice,
- REQUIREMENTS:
- Current certificate of competence as Registered Nurse (RPN) from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Program of study must have included physical assessment or must provide proof of post graduate completion of this course
- Previous experience teaching, or equivalent experience precepting, working with clinical learners or orientating new staff
- Basic cardiac life support certification
- Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the General Class with minimum three (3) years of clinical experience
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
- Familiar with CNO Entry to Practice Competencies and Professional Nursing Standards
- Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning in nursing
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Excellent clinical skills and competencies
- Demonstrated leadership, change management and problem-solving skills
- Must have demonstrated ability to meet the attendance standards of the Hospital
