Youth Basketball Referee

Port Colborne Basketball was founded over 25 years ago with the goal of providing local children an opportunity to have fun, learn to play basketball and develop basketball skills in an organized and supervised environment. Children from the local communities of Port Colborne and Wainfleet aged 6-18 years old actively participate in our basketball program.

**Position Summary**

The Basketball Referee is responsible for officiating youth basketball games making sure that players follow the rules of the game, ensuring that points are properly scored, issuing fouls when the rules are broken, and enforcing athlete safety.

**Duties and Responsibilities**
- Officiate youth basketball games keeping players safe and the games under control.
- Communicate with coaches to ensure games start promptly.
- Enforce applicable game rules and assess/issue fouls when necessary.
- Use appropriate whistle and signals while officiating.
- Model impartial practices in all games.
- Where necessary, guide players in learning the rules and fundamentals of the game.
- Promote positive ethics, attitudes and sportsmanship in players.
- Keep track of game times, starting and stopping playing when necessary.
- Act professionally at all times and serves as role model for the participants and fans.
- Wear required referee attire as specified by Port Colborne Basketball when officiating a game.
- Display regular attendance and punctuality.
- Gain a strong sense of patience, leadership, communication and decision-making skills.

**Qualifications**
- Must have a familiarity with the rules of basketball.
- Must be available to work Saturdays (and/or Sundays) from October to March.
- Must be able to communicate with coaches to get games started promptly.
- Must be able to run for extended amounts of time.
- Must be able to make sound decisions quickly.
- Must be able to remain impartial.
- Must be able to display patience and remain calm in a competitive and sometimes stressful atmosphere.

Referee training clinic will take place on September 23, 2023 in Port Colborne.
