Squall is an online B2B news service that operates three websites including RENX.ca, RENXHomes.ca and SustainableBiz.ca. Expanding on its success in the B2B, online news publishing sector Squall is planning to open additional news networks in 2024 and beyond.

Squall is a small, but busy company, with 10 employees a roster of freelance workers and it has an entirely remote workforce in locations across Canada.

The Chief Technology Officer is a new role for Squall that will encompass a wide range of responsibilities. it is an ideal position for someone with SAAS development experience coupled with a strong understanding of business ideally in the news publishing sector.

Squall has a proprietary publishing platform that it is enhancing with further functionality vital for the daily operations of deadline driven newsroom.

If taking on responsibility for the management all of Squall’s software requirements, including its proprietary software and its ongoing development process, about 40 third party software products integral to its operations and its IT system for a remote workforce is something you would enjoy — then this position is for you.

**About the team**

The CTO will report to the Squall CEO, engage as required with Squall employees and work alongside Squall’s third-party website development team (in Canada) which is primarily responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of the company’s websites and online hosting environment.

Squall is seeking a team player with strong communication skills, who can partner with senior staff members within company, the web development group and across the business to meet key strategic initiatives related to its software needs.

We are looking for an individual who is both software and business savvy, capable of troubleshooting and analyzing technical issues and platforms.

We are seeking a critical thinker, with a proactive mindset, solid organization, and communication skills, adaptable, capable of managing multiple parallel activities and shifting priorities as the business requires.

**Responsibilities**
- Assist in the direction and management of web development projects delivered by third party.
- Establish a program of best practices for the maintenance and development of current and future projects.
- Establish a stable and secure environment for Squall’s existing network, systems, integrated software products and remote worker office locations.
- Review of Squall’s current Google Workspace account and engage with its Google Partner in implementing best practices.
- Introduce software automations to existing third party platforms to facilitate greater efficiency in day-to-day operations.
- Monitor the management of hardware and software licenses and projecting future needs
- Conduct ongoing technical reviews of products to stay abreast of solutions that would enhance Squall operations.
- Track, analyze and monitor technological performance metrics.
- Evaluation of Squall’s CRM, review alternative products, and establish a CRM plan and structure to service Squall’s future requirements.
- Develop strategies for advancing partnerships, technology platforms and external relationships
- Develop a plan technical staffing requirements for Squall and clarification of the role third party organizations in the delivery of Squall product.
- Provide direction to an in-house assistant to deliver software upgrades as required
- Develop an annual capital and operating budget for the purchase of tools, staffing and to ensure effective operations
- Create procedures, documentation and training materials as required.

**Qualification and primary skills**
- University graduate in computer science, computer engineering, information systems or demonstrated equivalent experience.
- 5+ years’ experience in a leadership role ideally in a SaaS technology organization.
- Prior experience as CTO or VP Technology is highly desirable.
- Able to work in organizational models where resources are a mix of in-house and 3rd party.
- Years of hands-on experience with a multitude of software products and development projects.
- Previous experience with CRM structure and functionality such as Copper, Hubspot and Salesforce.
- Experience with development of decoupled, cloud-based architecture, capable of operational efficiency, platform growth, and supporting evolving business requirements.
- Solid grasp of established and emerging technology trends, areas such as cloud-based architectures, API and service driven solutions, AI, and big data concepts.
- Able to work well with ambiguity or when requirements are still undetermined.
- Experience with online 24/7 news publishing environment or similar high paced business.
- Demonstrated ability to take on the responsibilities of the CTO at Squall.

Pay: $85,000.00-$120,000.00 per year
