**Nature of the Position**
Under the direction of the Public Works Manager, the Equipment Operator I operates mobile equipment up to and including a 5-ton dump truck for the purposes of carrying material and operational equipment, performs vehicle maintenance activities and assists in performing other Public Works activities.
**Essential Competencies**
Applicants must have Grade 12 (or equivalent); one year of experience in general laboring; and hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with air and heavy trailer endorsements or a Class 1 Driver’s Licence. Applicants must have hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of power and hand tools; the ability to exert, sustain and repeat physical and mental actions necessary to complete tasks; and work under conditions requiring strength, endurance and focused attention in all types of weather.
Applicants must have a professional, responsive, and positive work attitude; the ability to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situations; and the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully one-on-one or in a group environment.
**Preferred Competencies**
Experience operating snow clearing equipment, bobcat and backhoe is preferred.
**Working Conditions**
This is a unionized position within the BCGEU. The District of Sechelt supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Code of British Columbia. Salary for the position is Grid Level 6, $29.21 - $32.45 per hour, with an attractive benefits package. Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week. **This position involves shiftwork, including weekends, from November to March for snow and ice removal.**
