**Our Parks & Environment Department is seeking a Natural Resource Management Technician who will coordinate restoration projects in regional parks, build relationships with volunteers and partners, conduct biophysical surveys, undertake monitoring and manage data. You will join a dynamic team of applied biology professionals and restoration technologists to work on site specific as well as regional initiatives to understand and improve the ecological health of some of the most biodiverse protected areas in the region.**

**You are: passionate about nature and the environment, having both the technical knowledge to coordinate restoration projects and the interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide range of staff, volunteers, park partners, and external agencies to turn vision into reality.**

**This role**:

- Collaborates with staff and park partners to develop annual and multi-year work plans and procedures to facilitate restoration, research and adaptive management of natural assets within regional parks; assists with parks projects and research studies related to natural resource management initiatives and potential habitat restoration and research projects; assists with best practices related to policy proposals for review by a superior.
- Promotes awareness of policies, objectives and programs to various stakeholders, staff, volunteers and the general public to manage environmental issues within regional parks such as, invasive plants, beaver management, tree management, artificial nests, and human-wildlife conflicts.
- Assists in determining treatment priorities, restoration plans, strategies, and tactics for natural resource management; conducts field mapping inventories of invasive plant species; conducts biophysical field surveys; collects and interprets data, ecological values and biodiversity measures; monitors efficacy of invasive species treatments; researches activities, and ecological restoration progress; processes data collected through GPS activities or other sources into structured GIS models and manages these systems; provides current and reliable information; and creates GIS derived natural resources management related maps as requested.
- Facilitates recruitment initiatives for volunteers; utilizes tools including web pages, volunteer placement boards, information sessions, volunteer fairs, post-secondary institutions and other networking opportunities; communicates project objectives, expectations, locations, etiquette, and scheduling with volunteers.
- Identifies opportunities for volunteers to get involved in ecological restoration and wild life monitoring; explains site safety guidelines; refers and assigns volunteers to projects and events; coordinates staff resources and contractors to assist in the delivery of programs such as invasive species removal; ensures equipment and supplies are on-site; acquires, maintains, and replaces equipment as required.
- Provides information, orientation, resources and training to volunteers; tracks volunteer time and effort; and inputs information into volunteer data tracking system.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, consultants, municipal and other levels of government, various authorities, First Nations, and non-governmental organizations to help promote natural area management initiatives and objectives.

**To be successful, you have**:

- University graduation with a degree in biological sciences, environmental studies, forestry, natural resource management, geography, planning or a related discipline plus some related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of biophysical inventory methods, species identification techniques, environmental impact mitigation measures, and sustainability principles and approaches.
- Considerable knowledge of federal, provincial, and regional, policies, best practices, legislation and regulations related to the work.
- Sound knowledge of ecosystem functions, principles, and practices of environmental management.
- Sound knowledge of GPS, GIS and related spatial and non-spatial database management and mapping systems.
- Ability to collect, analyze and interpret statistical, technical and narrative parks natural resource management data.
- Ability to participate in matching and placing volunteers, provide orientation, training and monitoring work performance of same.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, internal and external contacts and to provide information and assistance to the same.
