First United Church Community Ministry Society is looking for field education students to mentor at our non-congregational community of faith. Spiritual Care at First United provides intentional, trauma-informed, culturally safe, spiritual care for vulnerable community members in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver struggling with issues such as poverty, substance usage, and mental health. If it is your desire to learn how to provide pastoral support and spiritual care in a non-congregational community of faith, this is the purpose filled work for you. **POSITION OBJECTIVE**
This position is accountable to the Indigenous Spiritual Care Chaplain. The Field Education Students are a vital part of the Spiritual Care team, working with First United Staff across all departments and with Spiritual Care Volunteers to provide intentional, trauma-informed, culturally safe, spiritual care for vulnerable community members in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver struggling with issues such as poverty, substance usage, and mental health. A FE Student at First United must be attentive to the religious, spiritual and ethical needs of community members, and be supportive of religious diversity with authenticity towards their own beliefs and spirituality. A FE Student at First United must possess initiative, openness to the new or unfamiliar, an ability to listen to others, and an eagerness to grow.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Write weekly reflections and meet weekly with Indigenous Spiritual Care Chaplain for supervision and debriefing.
- Attend trainings including: Non-violent crisis intervention, naloxone, Indigenous cultural safety, and emergency and non-emergency trainings.
- Provide spiritual care through spiritual presence, conversation, and listening to community members who access First United’s Food Truck.
- Engage the community through First United’s Blessing Booth, giving prayer, blessings, and affirmations.
- Regularly check in with Advocacy and Help Desk Offices for spiritual care visits from community.
- Officiate a maximum of one funeral or memorial per academic term on behalf of First United.
- Work on special projects, based on the Student’s interests, talents, and imaginations.
- Other duties as required.
**SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY**
**Supervisory/Management responsibility**:
None
**Latitude**:The nature of working in spiritual care is stressful and often will be supporting clients in crisis brought about by diverse life events and experiences. The Field Education Student must have the ability to function independently and under pressure, while managing a multitude of other emergency tasks. If clarification is required, it is expected that the incumbent will request further direction from the Indigenous Spiritual Care Chaplain.
