Reporting to the Manager, Parks Operations this position is responsible for the supervision, planning and scheduling of all resources necessary to carry out all horticulture aspects to the community. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: town wide public floral and shrub displays, including business improvement areas and winter control activities within assigned areas, including establishing, inspecting and maintaining outdoor ice rinks. The position also oversees the operation of the municipal greenhouses and conservatory, including staffing and ornamental crop production, as well as, facility maintenance of the south east depot and storage facilities.

**What can I expect to do in this role?**:
As the Supervisor, Horticulture you will:

- Supervise, delegate and oversee work carried out by staff (full time, temporary and part time) and contractors to ensure it is performed effectively and efficiently and in accordance with town or departmental standards, levels of service, specifications, policies, procedures and legislated requirements;
- Select, motivate, train, manage and evaluate staff, and schedule work according to priorities; review employee performance on a regular basis and take corrective/disciplinary action, as required;
- Track, report, record and document on operational performance, activities and costs;
- Respond to, investigate and follow up with inquiries/requests for service/complaints from the general public, residents, emergency services, other departments, senior management and members of council; community partners, Region of Halton
- Schedule and oversee development, maintenance, capital programs (including assisting in the preparation of specifications and meeting with and scheduling of contractors), purchasing of supplies and equipment and overseeing and auditing of service contracts as appropriate;
- Oversee the scheduling of work orders and adjusting the schedule (as may be necessary) to ensure that all services are rendered;
- Assist in the annual development of tender specifications; troubleshoot and administer contracts for performance/non-compliance issues;
- Train and instruct new and existing workers to perform job functions properly and safely;
- Plan and organize plant requirements for the planting season; oversee and guide annual plant production, including hanging basket and container stock;
- Assume additional hours, attend evening meetings, special events and rotating on-call duties for overnights and weekends throughout the year as required.

**How do I qualify?**:

- Successful completion of a college diploma in Horticulture from a recognized institution or related field.
- Minimum 5 years progressively responsible experience in supervisory positions that have resulted in outstanding leadership complemented by a highly developed understanding of municipal government and service delivery.
- Holds a valid Ministry of Environment Landscape Exterminator License.
- Strong background in the fundamentals of IPM as it relates to horticulture and floriculture.
- A copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver's License Class G minimum with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour must be provided. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test as a condition of employment.

**Core Knowledge Required for Success**

You are an experienced leader with a comprehensive knowledge of:

- Current and future policies, practices, trends, design principles, technology and information relating to horticulture, knowledge of chainsaw operation and trade equipment maintenance and standard operating procedures;
- Computerized environmental control systems( i.e. Argus for the greenhouse and conservatory)
- Occupational Health and Safety and Highway Traffic Acts Book 7, Pesticide act regulations and directives as these apply;
