The Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Cultural Coach assists the Regional Centre in improving Mi'kmaw student learning in all schools by supporting the school community in strengthening culturally relevant practices and creating a school environment that is inclusive and reflective of cultural diversity.

**RESPONSIBLITIES**:
Reporting to the Coordinator of Mi'kmaw Education Services and in collaboration with the Mi'kmaq Services Branch, within the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development shall be responsible to:

- Assist teachers, school-based administrators, and various personnel/positions within the school system on cultural perspectives and helping schools to reflect cultural diversity.
- Provide support, planning and facilitation to teachers and principals within the Treaty Education framework established by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
- Supporting teachers in implementing the concepts of Etuaptmumk, Netukulimk, land-based learning and Treaty Education into all curriculum. Work in classrooms with teachers to improve each teacher's classroom-based instruction and assessment practices to benefit all students with a focus on Mi'kmaq/Indigenous learners.
- As needed, attend staff, community, and other meetings relevant to position such as ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Interpret and respond to school, region, and provincial data for Grades P-12 to improve instruction and student achievement, including support of Student Success Planning, collaborative teams and teaching support teams.
- Work directly with schools, the Coordinator of Mi'kmaw Education/Services and Mi'kmaq communities to strengthen relationships between Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education and the people of Mi'kmaq/Indigenous descent throughout the region.
- Travel throughout the region and to work outside of regular school hours to accomplish the goals of the position.
- Help to identify needs as well as gaps in services for students and assist in arranging initiatives for Mi'kmaq/Indigenous students.
- Develop and conduct workshops and presentations to staff and students, at times in collaboration with other regional staff members.
- Assist in obtaining appropriate cultural resources within the region's educational system.
- Assist schools in promoting a welcoming place for parents/guardians and other community members.
- Prepare regular reports and other records requested by the Coordinator of Mi'kmaq Education/Services.
- Keep current with the availability of relevant external support and organizations initiatives.
- Respect confidentiality and other policies and guidelines.
- Other duties or activities as assigned by the Regional Coordinator of Mi'kmaq Services/Education.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Designated position for a Mi'kmaw person.
- Excellent knowledge of Mi'kmaw history, culture, traditions and educational issues is required.
- Excellent knowledge of current and historic Indigenous issues and a strong commitments to help move the system towards positive change to address these issues.
- Valid Nova Scotia Teachers Certificate or eligibility for a Permit to Teach, is required.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience facliitating in an education classroom environment or cultural educational workshops.
- Equivalancies may be considered depending on training or experience.
- Experience working with Mi'kmaw students, communities, and organizations is required.
- Fluency, knowledge and/or an understanding to read and write the Mi'kmaw Language is considered an asset.
