In consultation with the Program Manager the Residential Care Worker provides nursing assistance, personal care, community leisure programs, companionship, housekeeping duties and support to persons with disabilities living in a group home, while providing a safe, natural, clean, home-like environment. Encourages the residents to be as independent as possible and to achieve an active, productive, and rewarding lifestyle by working side by side with the residents; implementing positive, creative experiences to enhance resident quality of life. The worker works with all the residents and may be assigned key worker responsibilities for specific residents, including writing monthly reports.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Reads residents daily journal/progress notes and communication log, at the start of each shift. Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as health/leisure progress notes, checklists, and financial records by the end of each shift.
- Prepares, administers, and documents medications, in accordance with established policy, Individual Service Plan, and under the direction of the physician.
- Contacts emergency services immediately in life threatening situations such as major illness or injury and follows emergency team direction for action.
- Telephone’s the family doctor’s office and makes medical appointments for residents, under the direction of the Program Manager, registered nurse, or other registered medical professionals.
- Assists residents and performs activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, skin care, oral hygiene, hair care, toileting, bladder and bowel care and other non-nursing care, as outlined in the established Individual Service Plan.
- Observes and monitors the residents and their environment each shift, and reports physical, cognitive, or behavioural changes, to the manager.
- Positions, repositions, and transfers residents by means of ceiling lift, mechanical lift, or two-person repositioning in accordance with the Occupational Therapist’s guidelines, for resident’s comfort, safety, body alignment, promotion of respiration and circulation.
- Follows the mealtime guidelines set up and outlined by the registered dietician nutritionist for oral/tube feeds by preparing, cooking, feeding, administering, noting changes in appetite and/or food preferences, and storage of food.
- Performs range of motion exercises as set up and outlined by a registered medical professional.
- Participates in the resident’s leisure activities that include swim programs, parties, crafts, shopping, games, reading, computer time, pet interaction, walks and dancing to stimulate social interaction and physical activity.
- Accompanies and assists residents on outings such as appointments, shopping, vocational and leisure activities, and arranges transportation to and from these activities.
- Receives resident feedback, inquiries and complaints, and responds and reports concerns to management in accordance with established policy.
- Performs the duties of a key worker as assigned. All regular staff will be assigned a key resident, casual staff will be assigned key worker duties when covering for a regular staff.
- Identifies and reports all potential safety hazards and ongoing maintenance concerns to the Program Manager.
- Maintains household supply levels by checking and restocking supplies such as personal care, emergency, and housekeeping supplies and assists in taking inventory.
- Shops for groceries by means of going to the store, collecting and purchasing groceries.
- Performs housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, completing general laundry, and garbage/recycling collection and disposal.
- Maintains and clears sidewalks and driveway of debris by sweeping, including snow removal by shovelling.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- High school diploma
- Resident Care Attendant Certificate
- Member in Good Standing with the BC Care Aide Registry
- Current Emergency CPR A / First Aid certificate for community care facilities
- Recent related experience working with the disabled population in a group home setting
