Interested in gaining hands-on field and laboratory research experience? The Aquatic Biogeochemistry Laboratory at the University of Alberta is seeking a research assistant to take part in research examining the effects of permafrost thaw on aquatic ecosystems. In particular, this research will investigate how permafrost thaw slumps in the western Canadian Arctic are affecting freshwater ecosystem health and the regional carbon cycle. This position represents an excellent opportunity to gain experience in scientific research while working in a unique location.
- Duties and responsibilities_

This project is based in the laboratory of Dr. Suzanne Tank at the University of Alberta, with fieldwork based out of Inuvik, NT planned from July 12 to August 2. Duties will include: assisting with field sampling activities, including equipment preparation, water sample collection, and driving to/from field sites; basic lab analyses while in the field, including water sample processing and working with basic laboratory instruments; assistance with water quality analyses at the University of Alberta; and assistance with data entry for samples and measurements collected in the field. The intern will work closely with a M.Sc. student involved in the project.
- Knowledge and skills_
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and adapt to changing circumstance is essential
- Experience with field research, sample collection, or general laboratory procedure is considered an asset
- Ability to work with a team and complete tasks carefully and successfully is critical
- Willingness to hike moderate distances with equipment and work in inclement weather conditions (rain, cool weather) is critical
- Willingness to adapt to a changing schedule and possible long hours while in the field is critical
- A valid class 5 Canadian driver’s license is an asset
- Previous laboratory certifications such as WHMIS is an asset
- Valid first aid is an asset

**Job Types**: Full-time, Seasonal
Contract length: 3 months

Pay: From $17.78 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 35 per week

Flexible Language Requirement:

- French not required

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
