**POSITION OVERVIEW**:
The English faculty tutors in the Learning Centre perform three crucial functions:

- providing online and in-person assistance to students seeking additional support in their studies, thus reifying in a practical and effective way the university’s commitment to student success.
- acting as liaisons between the English Department and the Learning Centres, ensuring that each has an informed understanding of the general goals, specific targets and methodologies of the other.
- assisting in some of the initial training and mentoring of people who have taken the first few steps on the road to becoming teachers or perhaps even university professors themselves.

**Terms of Service**:

- The full term **is one-time release per semester in Fall and Spring for two consecutive years.**:

- A faculty tutorship represents a one-quarter release from teaching responsibilities each semester; it should therefore be thought of as the equivalent, in time and effort, of a section of English 1100. The number of hours per week for all work should average out to somewhere between **six and nine hours per week for the semester,** but there should be some flexibility in the hours for any given week.
- Six hours of time spent tutoring students
- Such assistance is, of itself, an important part of the mandate
- The faculty tutors have to “keep their hand in” as tutors to give peer tutors a chance to shadow their tutoring sessions—and to give themselves a chance to intelligently shadow the peer tutors in their sessions
- The faculty tutors have to spend a considerable amount of time on site to be able to field questions, offer advice and, when necessary, control quality
- The remaining time to be spent on tasks supporting the training and mentoring of peer tutors as per the Learning Centre Writing Tutor and Tutor Training modules.

**Specific Responsibilities**:

- **Conducting brief conversations** with each of the Learning Centres’ new hires for English and writing
- To foster collegiality
- To ensure that the faculty tutors have a clear sense of the people they should be working with/mentoring
- To ensure that the peer tutors know who the faculty tutors are, and are able to recognize them as people that they could turn to for assistance and advice
- **Attending and participating in all initial writing tutor training**
- To become knowledgeable about and able to support preferred writing tutor methodologies for face to face and online writing tutoring
- To foster collegiality among faculty and peer tutors
- **Providing appropriate support for all three levels of writing tutors**:

- **Level One**: shadowing and demonstrating preferred tutoring methods; discussing various situational issues in regularly scheduled group meetings of the level one tutors with the faculty tutors
- **Level Two**: structuring observations and providing feedback and coaching in line with Level 2 outcomes
- **Level Three**: reviewing portfolio content and working with Learning Centre personnel regarding relevant professional development activities

**More General Responsibilities**:

- Modelling appropriate writing tutoring, demonstrating techniques that are to be encouraged within the KPU Learning Centres and online supports (WriteAway and WriteUp)
- Meeting regularly with Learning Centre personnel to discuss the ongoing training needs of particular tutors and the progress of the tutors
- Meeting regularly with Learning Centre personnel to discuss ways of ensuring the best fit possible between the activities conducted in the Learning Centres and student success in the courses that they are taking at Kwantlen Polytechnic University
- Preparing a brief annual report on work done in the Learning Centres, to be presented to the Chair of the English Department and the Director, Student Development (Learning Centres)
