**Manager, Poultry Research and Teaching Unit an Livestock Research Barn**:
**Primary Purpose**: To provide operational management and leadership of the Poultry Research and Teaching Unit and the Livestock Research Barn on the University of Saskatchewan Animal Science Farm.

**Nature of Work**: Reporting to the Department Head, the Manager is a member of the senior management team directly responsible for managing and participating in operations and providing strategic direction for the Poultry Research and Teaching Unit and Livestock Research Barn, as it relates to academic and research programs. The position requires close collaboration with faculty and research scientists, extension specialists and instructional staff. The Manager is a liaison between scientists and graduate students and staff regarding appropriate implementation of research and teaching in the unit. This position will liaise with other units, both internal and external to the University: Facilities Management Division, Purchasing Services; vendors for the purchase of animals, feed, equipment, supplies and services; various companies regarding animal sales, and custom research services. It may be required to facilitate outreach and engagement activities with the poultry industry. If required, the manager will be expected to assist with daily operations on-site. This position works in a complex environment and the Manager requires discretion, tact, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

**Education**: M.Sc. degree with training in poultry science is preferred. Lesser qualifications will be considered with substantial relevant experience.

**Experience**: A minimum of five years of experience relevant to this position, including experience in poultry production and knowledge of poultry house controls; experience in teaching; functional knowledge of PC computer systems and MS Office software. A good understanding of Canadian Council of Animal Care guidelines as well as health, safety, and environment protocols.

**Accountabilities**:
**_People Resources_**
- Provide quality coaching and monitor staff performance to ensure success of direct reports in delivering outcomes aligned with unit plans.
- Implement appropriate supervisory controls ensuring objective and consistent employee relations are met.
- Ensure equipment SOPs are being followed for the safety of employees and the equipment
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with faculty, instructional staff, and particularly with other animal unit managers, in ensuring high standards in research and teaching.
- Work with Career Services to maintain the undergraduate volunteer program, including recruitment of students and scheduling.

**_ Financial and Resource Management_**
- Effective budget planning and management to achieve a cost effective and up-to-date research and teaching facility. Development of operating and capital budget requirements, independent assessment and approval of purchases, including the purchase and sale of animals.
- Ensure facility upkeep is being maintained at a high level and assess laying hen and broiler production at regular intervals, adjusting management as needed.
- Develop, communicate and implement effective management policies and practices. Build professional working relationships and use discretion in decision-making and provide expertise and share best practices with other animal units in the department, as assigned by the Department Head.

**_ Facility Support Activities _**
- Ensure correct and timely maintenance of equipment and coordinate service and repairs with vendors within university and budget guidelines.
- Track feed inventory, order feed commodities and coordinate shipments from vendors.
- Participate in flock maintenance activities.
- Participate in research activities.

**_Enable Research, Teaching and Scholarly Activity_**
- Understand experimental design and have the ability to ensure proper experimental protocols are followed.
- Collaborate with research staff to devise and implement technology and research protocols that facilitate excellence in research and teaching, including an effective communication strategy.
