Elder/spiritual Care Provider

To ensure the Elders, their families and staff have access to the appropriate level of mental wellness support services, that is culturally safe. Provide education and training to all staff regarding cultural values, beliefs, and traditions.

**Responsibilities**:

- Develop and facilitate activities to encourage positive impact on physical, mental, spiritual and emotional
- health;
- Provide referrals and coordination to traditional healing ceremonies;
- Coordinate cultural support services such as ceremonies, prayers and traditional healing to Elders, their
- families and staff;
- Facilitate traditional teachings and healing/debriefing circles;
- Liaise with member First Nations communities to promote cultural resources;
- Build networks and effectively communicate with different stakeholders including Indigenous community members, and other relevant agencies promoting awareness of Indigenous issues;
- Facilitate related wellness workshops;
- Participates in special projects;
- Serves as a member of various standing and ad hoc committees;
- Acts as a resource to the Elders, their families and staff;
- Works with employment personnel and facility management to develop, organize, maintain and evaluate content of orientation for all new staff, students and volunteers as it relates to Indigenous teachings and Indigenous issues;
- Collaborates with Resident Care Managers in the creation of an environment that encourages and supports creativity, innovation, critical thinking and a healthy workplace environment;
- Recognizes and reports situations, occurrences, problems or concerns in a timely fashion following appropriate communication channels;
- Maintains effective communication with other programs/services to support quality care and service delivery;
- Participates in quality assurance and evaluation programs on an ongoing basis;
- Researches and develops appropriate knowledge as required for specific projects such as cultural diversity education, workplace harassment and other workplace issues;
- Maintains a current clinical knowledge base through practice, own learning and dissemination of education to others;
- 1-1 visits and small group discussions with the Elders to provide emotional and spiritual support;
- End of life care and support to the Elders, their families and staff;
- Acts as an interpreter for the Elders/families as required;
- Performs other duties as assigned;

**Qualifications**:

- Degree, diploma or certificate in Indigenous studies; relevant experience or other education will be considered; other certificate programs and experience will be considered
- Knowledge of cultural practices, trauma informed care and lived experience is an asset;
- Knowledge of the legacy of residential schools, colonization, assimilation, and the impacts of such history on the overall health of individuals;
- Knowledge of truth and reconciliation and the 94 Calls to Action;
- Connections/networking with Indigenous organizations and communities;
- Knowledge and experience in Anishinaabe cultural teachings and ceremonies;
- Connections to Anishinaabe Knowledge Keepers, spiritual Elders and other cultural resources

**Skills and Abilities**:

- Ability to work under pressure, to meet competing demands and deadlines and to deal effectively with difficult and sensitive situations;
- Ability to adapt readily to changing demands and situations;
- Able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment with respect, professionalism, cooperation, sensitivity and cultural awareness;
- Able to take initiative and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Demonstrated proficiency in conducting individual/group counselling;
- Ability to function creatively and independently;
- Ability to communicate in a First Nations language(s) and/or previous exposure to First Nations communities and cultures would be considered an asset;
- Possess a current province of Manitoba driver’s license and a suitable vehicle for work-related transportation;
- Advanced planning and problem-solving skills;
- Commitment to continued professional development;
- Leadership skills, particularly in collaborative projects;
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse employee population and external stakeholders;
**Position Elements**:

- May be required to work extended hours;
- May involve exposure to disease, toxic materials, noise, etc. The employer will take all reasonable measures to reduce the risk of exposure to staff;
- May encounter aggressive and/or agitated patients/residents/staff/visitors;
- Must provide a criminal record check. Issues and concerns can be reviewed and discussed.
- Must provide an Adult Abuse Registry check.
