Legal Counsel - AML, ATF & Sanctions

Purpose of Job:
Scotiabank’s Legal Department is hiring a lawyer at the Legal Counsel level for its Toronto legal team who will (i) provide advice and counsel to a broad range of bank stakeholders regarding Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Sanctions, (ii) manage regulatory matters and investigations regarding the above, and (iii) monitor and instructing external counsel. There will be a primary focus on operations in Canadian jurisdictions but coordination with international jurisdictions will be required. This position reports to the Director, Strategic Initiatives.

Qualifications:
- Experience in banking or payment systems is an asset.Key Job Accountabilities:
1. Provides legal analysis, documentation, negotiation, preparation, review, research and advice and counsel to line management on matters of above average complexity in the development of new programs.

2. Researches legal issues of substantial complexity on a national or regional basis and proposed federal and provincial legislation to evaluate impact on the Bank; informs management on developing legal trends and their impact on operations and recommends courses of action.

3. Represents the Bank at meetings or on committees with government, public and private organizations; researches and prepares submissions to government bodies on legislation and other issues affecting the organization.

4. Directs the activity of outside counsel.

5. Recommends and/or carries out the course of action to be taken regarding ongoing matters.

6. Superintends the work of counsel and staff within a group, including setting work standards, methods and procedures within the Department in accordance with company-wide policies and appraising work performance.

Skills, Experiences and Functional Competencies:

- Under general direction of the Director, Strategic Initiatives, the Legal Counsel will research and analyze highly complex legal issues, sometimes with little or no precedent.
- Possess excellent judgment, a strong business acumen, problem solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- The Position will require the ability to work across stakeholder groups in multi-function teams.
- The position requires a high degree of analytical and communications skills.
