**Job Summary**

**Organizational Status**

The applicant will be located at St. Paul's Hospital in the UBC Centre for Heart Lung Innovation. All work will be done indoors and full access to all necessary safety equipment and training will be provided. Hazards include: working with human blood, tissue, and fluid samples, cytotoxic agents (cytokines, apoptosis inducing agents) and the handling of potentially hazardous chemicals (eg. ethidium bromide). The applicant will report directly to the principal investigator, with interactions and liaisons with research technicians and students.

**Work Performed**
- Processing of clinical trials sample and biobanking.
- Assisting and performing experiments.
- Handling of patient samples including blood and saliva.
- DNA Extraction
- Performing basic literature and internet searches for research and laboratory related resources.
- Maintaining research related records and database, entering data according to established protocols.
- Biobanking samples and keeping records of sample inventories.
- Ordering equipment, reagents and supplies and liaise with vendors and institutional finance and procurement departments.
- Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting problems with standard equipment.
- Organizing laboratory and stock, maintaining inventory.
- Preparing and/or maintaining media, buffer, reagents, solutions, cultures and related material for routine laboratory use.
- Other related duties as required.

**Consequence of Error/Judgement**

Carelessness during the performance of duties in the laboratory could jeopardize the progress of research projects. Lab Tech is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner following approved guidelines.

**Preferred Qualifications**

Undergraduate degree in a life sciences discipline required. Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Must be fastidious with respect to lab records and protocols. An understanding of or background in genetics and gene expression including techniques such as PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry and ELISAs would be a strong asset. Experience in training others is an asset. Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.

1. Chemical Safety certificate (UBC)

2. Biological Safety certificate (UBC)

3. TCPS 2

4. GCP
