- Malahat Nation is looking for a dedicated and hard-working Program Lead with Fisheries experience to join our Environment and Sustainable Development team Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation has been dedicated to protecting and understanding the local marine environments since time immemorial and must be a part of building the understanding required to manage these valuable resources effectively. **PURPOSE**:
Reporting to the Executive Director of Environment and Sustainable Development, and in collaboration with other members of the Malahat Environment team, the Program Lead will lead the development of Environmental Programs in partnership with the government of Canada and other funding providers. With increasing recreational, commercial and industrial activity in the Salish Sea, Malahat Nation is prioritizing protection of the important cultural and environmental resources that are a part of Malahat Nation’s territory.
- This position is a fulltime permanent position, based in the office, with possibility of a hybrid working arrangement. Occasional travel may be required._

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Lead environmental programs and reviews of major project impacts in Malahat Territory
- Assist in the hiring process for Environment and Sustainable Development staff in collaboration with Human Resources. Direct, supervise, monitor, and evaluate performance of employees and discipline where necessary in accordance with the Human Resources Policy
- Assist in development of Environmental Programs to best suit the unique needs of Canada’s First Nations and better understand the activities occurring on the Salish Sea
- Assist in coordinating and administering the environmental programs and managing program deliverables
- Develop and present creative solutions for mitigating human caused impacts throughout Malahat Nation’s marine territory
- Organize, lead, and work efficiently with Malahat Nation and other agencies such as government, local businesses, neighbouring Indigenous Nations, and the general public
- Educate the Malahat community on the Environmental concerns and program progress
- Coordinate environmental data-collection initiatives
- Manage budgets and report regularly on the progress of Environmental programs
- In collaboration with the Director of Finance, oversee the financial and human resource management aspects of the major projects in alignment with Financial Administrative Law (FAL) and Malahat Nation law and policy;
- Support environmental consultation and/or reviews of major projects in the Salish Sea agencies, and the public
- Present briefings for Malahat Chief and Council in collaboration with Director
- Provide analysis, review and drafting of key environmental documents and technical materials
- Other duties as required

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Masters Degree and two years of relevant experience or Bachelor Degree in a relevant area of study with 5-years relevant professional experience
- Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous and Coast Salish history and culture required
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of consultation requirements and Aboriginal Rights and Title required
- Class 5 BC driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- Successful Criminal Record Check (CRC) required
- Familiarity with Provincial and Federal laws, regulations, and policies related to the environment, land, and natural resource management required
- Effective December 3, 2021 full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Malahat Nation. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:

- Demonstrated experience working in a professional workplace and being an effective member of a team
- Demonstrated experience in the identification and evaluation of information required to support decision-making processes on major projects, programs, or other high-profile initiatives
- Experience with presenting results of assessments, options and impact analysis to senior staff or executive and other parties (i.e., local, provincial or federal government, industry, proponents, and Indigenous nations)
