**Description**: The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional to provide the Languages and Learning Sector Staff as well as the Chiefs Committees with advanced strategic research, collaboration and policy advice related to all languages and education policies and legislation affecting First Nations. The Special Advisor takes direction from and reports to the Director of Languages and Learning.

The Special Advisor will contribute to strategic direction in the development of sector work plans, conduct research, analyze, develop, coordinate and deliver policy briefings, reports and other written material including writing proposals. The Special Advisor supports sector staff and related committee processes in building effective relationships and networks with federal government officials from multiple departments, professional associations, and other non-government organizations.

The incumbent will be responsible for leading research and analysis to advance the Assembly of First Nations focus on the implementation of the Indigenous Languages Act, First Nations education funding and policy advancement, advocacy for regional organizations in developing authorities as needed, and review and revision of current policies and protocols.

**Applicants must possess**:

- A Graduate degree in education, languages, public policy, political science/or an equivalent combination of experience and education
- A minimum of 5 - 7 years’ experience in conducting research, analyzing information and policy experience.
- Extensive knowledge of First Nation’s education systems and language revitalization
- Demonstrated experience in providing strategic policy advice and synthesizing information into policy documents
- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex research and analysis, including policy research, policy analysis, writing proposals/reports, and leading projects and working groups
- Demonstrated project management skills including time management, organization and planning, attention to detail, teamwork and critical thinking skills
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively translate complex information to any audience
- Demonstrated experience liaising with First Nation’s governance as well as Federal, Provincial and Territorial Governments and their officials
- Tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and confidential matters
- Must have strong client relations experience in dealing with stakeholders
- English is the working language although the ability to communicate effectively in French or any Indigenous language would also be an asset
