**VISA-3027-301**:Medieval Art & Architecture**

**COURSE DESCRIPTION**:This course examines the origins, development, and maturation of art and culture in Europe from the 4th to the 14th century. The course will encompass the earliest developments of Christian imagery in catacombs, the arts of the Byzantine Empire, the advent of Islam, monastic culture, and the multi-media environment of Gothic Cathedrals from a cross-cultural perspective. We will address architecture, sculpture, and painting, as well as manuscript production, metalwork, mosaics, ivory, têxtiles, and stained glass. Students will study primary documents in translation, historical theories of optics and aesthetics, and current methodologies concerning the study of the medieval world.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Meet regularly with the faculty and students on grading, course content and other matters as needed; assist in the evaluation of student work, using criteria established by the supervising faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University’s educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.

**TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT**:Teaching Assistants are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years.

- One cannot hold both a Teaching Assistant and Faculty Appointment within the same semester.

**HOURS OF WORK**:
Hours per week are based on enrollment.

**COMPENSATION**:
$29.23 per hour, 6% in lieu of benefits, and vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
