Youth Support Worker

**Position Summary**:
This position will provide a safe and supportive environment for youth between the ages of 16 and 24, and to mentor youth in accessing and attending life skills workshops located in the White Buffalo Youth Lodge. The Youth Support Workers will support individuals in acquiring knowledge and skills that will help guide them in becoming adults who are informed, confident, independent, and well equipped to navigate the urban community. The Youth Support Worker will ensure that the Life Skills programs include culture and are accessible to vulnerable populations. The Support Worker is responsible for the client’s general well-being while accessing services at the White Buffalo Youth Lodge (WBYL), the Saskatoon Tribal Council, or other community-based organizations. The employee will be assisting in the facilitation of group work in a learning environment; intervening in occurrences of inappropriate behavior; and supporting cultural diversity by learning and participating in cultural programming, and other duties as assigned This position will support street-involved and vulnerable clients who may or may not have a permanent residence, and/or could be involved in other high-risk behaviours. The Youth Support Worker will be under the direct supervision and report directly to the Supervisor or their designate and will follow the STC Personnel and Financial Policies, the WBYL’s Policy and Procedure Manual, as well as the guidelines set forth for the Youth Lounge.
**Responsibilities**:
- Establishing a trusting, non-judgemental rapport with street-involved youth;
- Ensure youth will be safe and/or will have increased protection from abuse, neglect, and harm, or threat of harm;
- Ensure all resident’s basic needs are met for the interim such as food, & basic hygiene;
- Assist youth with their most emergent needs at the time of intake; Complete program Intake forms and assess youth upon initial intake;
- Provide information regarding services and opportunities available to youth within the community;
- Provide updated information and education with regard to safe health practices, life skills, conflict resolution, drugs, prostitution, gangs, and community resources;
- Provide a positive, safe, and structured environment;
- Actively supervise youth who are utilizing WBYL workshop and services;
- Respond appropriately in crisis situations as outlined in the procedural manual or directed by the supervisor;
- Compose and collect data for daily statistical collection;
- Submit both oral and written forms daily and any other reports as directed by policy and/or supervisor;
- Ensuring the Lounge area is clean and maintained
- Monitor and ensure that the resident’s physical needs such as hygiene are provided;
- Respect and ensure relative and program confidentiality agreement as outlined within the policy manual;
- Report to duty as scheduled by the supervisor; and
- Perform other related duties as defined and assigned by the reporting Director or designate on an as
- required basis.
**Education and Experience**
- Post-Secondary education within the Human Services field preferred;
- Three (3) years of related work experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated experience providing mentorship, coaching and feedback with the ability to motivate in a case management model
- Experience working within a governance structure in a community development capacity with First Nations; familiarity with First Nations culture, history is considered an asset.
**Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities**:
- Knowledge of and understanding Indigenous traditions and culture;
- Knowledge of basic computer programs, specifically Microsoft Office.;
- Experience/knowledge of street-involved youth is an asset;
- Ability to communicate with youth;
- Ability to deal with emergency situations related to health, safety, and addictions;
- Sensitivity toward cultural differences with particular emphasis to First Nations and Metis People;
- “Street Smarts” and awareness of street lifestyles and its potential impacts;
- Ability to work as a team member, as well as individually; and
- Knowledge of the political, social, and economic objectives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures will be considered an asset.
