Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.

The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.

In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Nature and Scope:
Reporting to the Patient Transfer Unit Supervisor, the Transport Operator is responsible for the safe operation of EHS vehicles and those clients/patients requiring assistance, and eligible for transport utilizing these resources for medical related services within EHS.

Operators must constantly monitor clients/patients and exercise a great deal of tact, diplomacy and customer service. Operators may deal with heavy traffic and congested streets. Operators must be alert and manage their personal well-being as they can drive for long periods of time, operate during peak periods and must cope with adverse weather, construction and traffic conditions. This position will be responsible for providing first aid services should the situation arise.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Education and Experience:

- Completion of High School
- Three (3) years driving experience.
- Hold a valid Nova Scotia class 5 drivers license with a safe driving record required. Class 4 would be an asset. Additional course centering around driver education an asset
- Current First Aid qualification including AED or willing to complete training prior to start. Willing to take additional training.
- Experience transporting clients, larger vehicles preferred
- Required to pass a physical abilities test prior to employment for lifting and moving patients.

- Use good judgement, decision making and problem solving when managing daily developments.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build good working relationships with internal and external partners to achieve common goals.

- Ability and commitment to handle confidentiality and sensitive issues with tact and discretion
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others to achieve company goals.
