**Gaspereau After School Program**

**Regular Part Time**

**Position Description**

The Regular Part Time Person at The Gaspereau After School Program (GASP) will assist in implementing the after school program, reporting to the Director and adheres to all the policies and procedures set out by the Gaspereau After School Program Society, the Nova Scotia Before and After Program, and the relevant provincial regulations.

**Required Qualifications, Certifications, Skills and Experience**
- Intermediate First Aid (including infant/child CPR)
- Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry letter
- Experience in a recognized child care/educational/recreational program considered an asset

**Position Specific Skills**
- Provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all children
- Provide a positive and fun learning experience for all children
- Provide developmentally appropriate programming (with the guidance of the Director as necessary)

Provide and participate in developmentally appropriate activities and experiences in harmony with the Program’s philosophy
- Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities
- Assist in carrying out a daily activity schedule that incorporates the children’s interests, care routines, and transitions
- Accurate recording of each child’s arrival and departure times from program each day
- Organize space, equipment and materials before activities
- Assist children in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions/comments that extend conversations
- Use a variety of strategies, including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating
- Assist children with social interactions and (when necessary) conflict resolution
- Provide experiences and materials that actively promote diversity and acceptance in interactions and attitudes
- Use observations to expand play and plan activities that recognize individual difference
- Set reasonable behaviour expectations consistent with the Program’s philosophy and policies
- Provide positive guidance such as redirection, positive language, and positive reinforcement
- Immediately address any behavioural concerns without labelling the child
- Follow behaviour guidance and policies established by the Program and consistent with accepted practice in the field
- Maintain confidentiality of all information relating to the Program’s children, their families, and GASP staff.
- Create an inclusive and responsive environment that embraces the myriad ways to support the children
- Create and maintain positive working relationships with the staff of the Gaspereau Valley Elementary School

**Health and Safety**
- Maintain a high degree of health and safety each day, following safety protocols, procedures, and best practices
- Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Director/Primary Support Person
- Monitor environment for hazards
- Report all incidents of child abuse and follow Program procedure/government regulations
- Constant awareness of any food allergies/sensitivities/restrictions of children and staff in program
- Release children only to authorized persons

**Parent communication**
- Discuss the program’s daily events and the child’s progress with parents
- Encourage parents to participate whenever possible

**Desired Competencies and Behaviours**
- Participate in the annual performance review process
- Plan and carry out personal development
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality
- Role model appropriate behaviours for staff and children
- Ability to be energetic and resilient, and maintain a sense of humour when personal resources may be challenged

- Personal initiative with good planning and organizational skills

**Hours and location of work**
- Gaspereau Valley Elementary School (Multi purpose room).

**2pm
- 5:30pm Monday to Friday** with the possibility of more (early dismissals etc)
- Excludes school holidays (winter break, March Break, summer)
- Additionally, if the Director or Primary Support Person is absent, the Part Time person will be offered the opportunity to substitute. Further details to be discussed.

**Additional considerations**
- **Must have reliable transportation**

End date: Beginning of July

**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 17 - 20 per week

**Salary**: From $15.00 per hour

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- No weekends

Work Location: One location

Expected start date: 2023-03-20
