The Forest Carbon and Climate Services Branch (FCCSB) in the Ministry of Forests (FOR) is accountable for strategic leadership of the ministry’s climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives. The Branch provides research, policy, and analysis to support implementation of the ministry’s climate action plans. The Research Climatologist is a staff member of the Future Forests Ecosystem Centre (FFEC), a new team of ecologists, climatologists, and data scientists within the Office of the Chief Forester. The FFEC forecasts climate change risks to BC’s forest ecosystems and translates these forecasts into decision support tools. The goal of the FFEC is to help planners, practitioners, and Indigenous knowledge holders in fostering ecosystems that are resilient to climate disruptions.

This position is a scientific advisor and researcher at the provincial level in the field of natural resource management. The position coordinates the provincial climatology program and liaises with other programs in areas of overlap. This includes strategic analysis and identifying needs, conducting research to support science-based decision-making, developing climatological datasets and decision-support tools, preparing and presenting extension materials, and providing expert professional advice relating to climatology and climate change science.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS ROLE INCLUDE:

- Doctorate in climatology or related field and, progressive and related experience in 2 out of the last 7 years; OR,
- Thesis-based M.Sc. in climatology or related field and progressive and related experience in 4 out of the last 7 years.
- Registered, or immediately eligible (within 6 months) for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area. (e.g., Association of Forest Professionals, Institute of Agrologists, Engineers and Geoscientists BC).
