To provide conservation services and technical guidance with respect to the treatment and preservation of artifact collections belonging to or under the care of Museums and Heritage Services.

**Major Responsibilities**:

- Examines and identifies conservation needs of objects required for exhibitions, loans and revenue generation projects; under consideration for acquisition or de-accessioning; having sustained damage.
- Plans, executes and documents conservation treatments. Refers to outside conservation expertise as required.
- Evaluates costs of conservation projects and forwards information to Supervisor.
- Responsible for daily operation of the conservation laboratory.
- Selects, co-ordinates and monitors external contractors for conservation projects and forwards information to Supervisor.
- Co-ordinates and monitors activities of conservation volunteers and interns (i.e. directs work of assistant conservator).
- Identifies conservation and preventive conservation priorities and reports findings to Supervisor.
- Develops policies and procedures concerning the conservation of collections and recommends to Supervisor for implementation.
- Provides advice and training on the care and conservation of objects belonging to or under the care of Museums and Heritage Services.
- Participates in the development of a conservation module and maintains the data in the collections management data base.

**Key Qualifications**:

- University degree or equivalent in a relevant area of conservation of cultural property or the relevant combination of education and experience.
- Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence required to operate a city vehicle or a properly insured vehicle
- Extensive experience with designing and performing conservation treatments on historic objects made of a variety of materials including fine art, archaeology, decorative art, furniture, têxtiles and 20th century objects.
- Extensive experience writing reports, including condition reports, conducting material culture research and analyzing artifacts with careful attention to detail.
- Considerable experience in the use of technical conservation laboratory equipment and digital photography equipment.
- Considerable experience performing conservation treatments within a strict budget and schedule constraints.
- Considerable experience administering an Integrated Pest Management Program.
- Considerable experience preparing and mounting a variety of artifacts for display in museum exhibitions.

**You must also have**:

- Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to simplify complex information to a diverse audience.
- A valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence or the ability to obtain a Licence.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships at all levels and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to exercise high level of judgement & initiative and effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, respond to multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines. Ability to provide advice on preventive care and train non-conservators on collection care in storage.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, heavy material in a safe manner.
- Knowledge of approaches to the care and treatment of objects from Indigenous and diverse communities
- Knowledge of safe handling and storage of hazardous substances and materials in accordance with established workplace practices.
- Knowledge of the Professional Code of Ethics as set by the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural Property.
- Ability to train, monitor and coordinate work of team members.
- Knowledge of best practices in Risk Management and Disaster Planning is an asset.
