The Royal BC Museum (RBCM) was established in 1886, making it one of the oldest continually operating museums in Canada. The RBCM, is updating not only the facilities and infrastructure, it is creating a new Collections and Research Building in Colwood, BC. It is an exciting time to join the museum team as we rethink and modernize our methods and processes, and welcome the perspectives and stories of all British Columbians.

The Exhibitions and Experience Development Department plans, designs and constructs exhibitions and attractions for the Royal BC Museum. Exhibitions produced include those that reside permanently in the Royal BC Museum precinct, those that are temporary, and those designed specifically to travel to other locations throughout the world. As well, the section provides ongoing maintenance and care of all Royal BC Museum exhibitions, in order to ensure ongoing preservation and safety of both the exhibitions and the collection, valued at approximately $200 million.

Under the general direction of the Director of Exhibitions and Experience Development and supervision of the Production Team Lead, this position is responsible for building and repairing structures and components in the museum’s exhibition and public spaces. The incumbent builds and repairs structures, components and mounts in exhibits, galleries and museum spaces; participates in the planning of museum exhibits; researches, develops and documents new methods and materials for exhibit production. The incumbent undertakes joinery/carpentry duties including (but not limited to) cabinet making, display case construction, millwork, laminating, wall construction, plastics, drywall installation, and painting. The work performed by this position complements the work of the Exhibit Fabrication Specialists.

The successful applicant will have a Red Seal Journeyperson certificate in Joinery with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working as a cabinet maker / joiner in a commercial environment. They will need to have a broad range of work experience on diverse custom projects including furniture, cabinetry and millwork as well as extensive hands-on experience; not only in machine operations. It would be considered an asset if you have had previous working experience in a museum, gallery or heritage restoration setting.
